Exchange Student page

For the 2001 school year Michael Nordstrom of Colby is studying and living in Auckland New Zealand.
We have been active members of the Colby AFS club since 1977. Nowadays there is competition from many exchange organizations and AFS isn't as active as it once was. Colby has had over 50 AFS foreign students and teachers, mostly for year-long programs but some for summer only. We had the only non-high school AFS exchange program, at Colby Community College for a few years. Also 15 CHS students have spent a summer or year in a foreign home and school with the AFS Americans Abroad program.
We have had the wonderful opportunity to visit former Colby AFS students after they've returned to South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Finland. Also our family hosted Hibiki Shibuya from Japan in 1992-3. He's now working in Montreal, after returning home to the mountains of Japan for a teaching job after being with us. Next we hosted Tibor Nagy of Hungary in 1994-5. He returned to college in Gyor and now works for Ericsson in San Diego. His wife works for Nokia! Both exchange years were wonderful experiences for us. Brother Ken's family hosted Saara Hyvonen of Finland in 1982-3. Brother Ron's family hosted Jorn Pedersen of Denmark in the 1970s.

We recommend AFS to anyone wishing to host, go to high school abroad, or help their local community enjoy the benefits of international student exchanges.
