Board service page

There are many ways to volunteer your services to worthwhile projects. If you have a good understanding of certain aspects of an organization or its functions, and have common sense and a willingness to serve regularly, you may want to contemplate serving on a board of directors. I have found that the voluntary service I've provided these groups is rewarded by increased understanding of the mechanics of their operations, and thus an increased appreciation for the services they provide.

Bruce served on the board of Western Plains Arts Assn. from the early 1980s-2001. We arrange a variety of cultural programs over an 8 county area -- normally up to 20 music, dance, drama and other arts programs per season. We sell season memberships and pursue special donations and grants. If you live in northwest Kansas and enjoy cultural programming, you need to be a WPAA member. Email our Executive Director Pat Ziegelmeier for more info.

Bruce has been on the board of Smoky Hills Public TV since 1990. We provide PBS and locally produced programming from offices in Bunker Hills KS, KOOD Channel 8. We also have KSWK Channel 3 in Lakin, KDCK UHF 21 in Dodge City, and UHF translators to cover almost all of the western half of Kansas: Oakley 15, Goodland 23, Oberlin 32, Norton 39, Hoxie 69, Phillipsburg 66, Concordia 64. Click here for coverage map. With my radio knowledge I can help cover the technical side of things on this board. I also enjoy on-air pitching during pledge drives, or "whining for dollars" as I sometimes refer to it. It is an important activity of public tv, as only about 10% of viewers support public tv beyond the couple tax dollars that annually come from the average taxpayer. The conversion to digital tv is our big long-range project.

Bruce is currently the board president of Pride of the Prairie Orchestra. We arrange conductors and venues for 3-4 orchestra programs per year in the nwKS, ecCO, and swNE areas, as well as plan fundraising activities, grants, etc. We are an all-volunteer group except for our conductors. We're looking for players in some sections and ALWAYS for strings. Please email me for information on performance opportunities, rehearsal schedules, and info on upcoming performances. Check out my trombone page.

Bruce holds one board position by competitive election, and is in his 8th year as Vice Director of the Midwest Division of the American Radio Relay League. The division covers KS NE MO IA. ARRL is the national membership organization and advocate for amateur radio. Our director Wade W0EJ and I attend hamfests and club meetings, giving out details of the latest ARRL and FCC activities and helping troubleshoot any problems members may have. Wade votes on policy matters at semi-annual meetings in Hartford and the South, which I also attend. Check out my amateur radio page.

Janice served on the board of Southwestern College, her BA alma mater, from 1985-1997.

Janice is Northwest Area Director for Kansas Association of Family and Community Education, an arm of NAFCE. I am a member of Morning Glory FCE of Thomas County, which meets Tuesdays at 9AM. Please email for meeting info.

Janice is on two boards through Colby United Methodist Church. I am on the board of PuddleDuck Preschool, an arm of CUMC providing morning and afternoon classes in a Christian atmosphere. I am also on the Hays District Board of Ordained Ministries, which reviews candidates in the process of becoming fully ordained ministers.

There's a professional board consultant who has an email tutorial series called BOARD SENSE. It's somewhat interactive and interesting. There's no charge to subscribe, but of course he's fishing for paying consulting jobs. Andrew Swanson has been a Board Development Consultant since 1976. PO Box 31708, Tucson AZ 85751.
