The Geographic Center of the 48 Contiguous States

130 miles east-northeast of us, in Smith County near the town of Lebanon, is the geographic center of the contiguous (or conterminous) 48 states. Once Alaska and Hawaii were added to the list, the site lost some of its appeal, but it is still an intriguing location, marked by a limestone cairn. There is at least some controversy surrounding how the site was determined. And, the sands along the Outer Banks, Cape Cod and other locations tend to migrate as well, so in any case it's probably a moving target.

When conversing with foreign ham radio operators or explaining to people not familiar with our states, it's easy to tell them we are "200 kilometers west of the center of the lower 48 states".
