FEBRUARY 1998
KS QSO PARTY
The Kansas QSO Party was held Feb. 7-8 for the first time in about 2 decades. KØBJ was among the stations on for some of the 24 hour event. Bruce handed out a few WØWOB/m QSOs too -- he didn't want to work stations that weren't logged using his own call while mobile. It was a big weekend for QSO Parties as VT DE and NH had theirs also. It appears this helped activity, as many stations seemed to be out prowling for new counties or states.KBØMBT HANDS OUT DM99
Gregg was active in the January VHF QSO party and while there weren't any big band openings, he snagged Larry NØLL at Smith Center, Gary NØKQY at Leoti and Ron NØYKR, brother of Dave KAØKCI who loaned MBT the TS700. Gregg heard some others that just couldn't quite make a QSO, including a YL rover in EN00, which is in Nebraska not far from Kathy's Mankato stomping grounds.SAPPA VALLEY FD INVITE
The Sappa Valley Club of Oberlin is planning a FD operation with LOTS of equipment just north of town. They've invited us to participate. The upside is there's be some real neat equipment, new ideas, etc. On the downside, those of us who can't make the entire event would be hard pressed to 'drop in'. THis would be a good discussion item for the meeting.
KGØPI QSOS "RARE" CARIBBEAN DX
Jim got in the log of ZF2CM, who happens to be KØBJ on vacation on Grand Cayman. KØFJ tried the sked as well but had a hard time getting home from work in time. Bruce made about 60 Qs with his "Field Day" TS50 and Spider whip, along with snorkeling and messing around with Jon KBØMBS and Janice. The bands were a little less than spectacular during the last couple weeks.FLECK UPDATE
KØRXT is feeling quite a bit better and getting around the house well. Thanks to KØFJ Fleck is back on the Internet, but with the new address donaldf@colby.ixks.com. We may be getting an antenna party together at some point to get some serious aluminum up in the air for Fleck.PATTI'S NEW JOB
NØOXP is now working at the CCC Student Services office and enjoys the working environment there. Patti's lunch break is regular now and she's been making Ham Lunch on Thursday noons at the Sirloin Stockade.KEARNEY
KØBJ made the Kearney hamfest -- from the east! His mother was in Omaha for surgery. Attendance was a little light but Burghardts seemed to be doing good business and the forums were well attended.DUES PAST DUE
Everyone (from the club) is getting a hardcopy newsletter this time, so we can distribute the $1 raffle tickets. If you haven't paid 1998 dues yet, this will be your last newsletter through the club. We will return to email only next month for those of you normally on email distribution.FURTHER INFO ON SCANNER
Our raffle scanner is an 80 channel desktop unit. These newsletters are coming with 10 tickets each. You don't need to buy the tickets, but any tickets returned for the drawing need to come with $1 each. See KØBJ if you need more tickets. Drawing will be at Field Day, or before.KV KNUDSON SK
We've been unable to confirm whether KV was a 'ham" Knudson but Julie Knudson Groom thinks he was. This extended family has produced more hams over more generations than any other in the area. KV Knudson passed away last week.BANDSCAN
BT Don't be alarmed if you're somewhere in Colby and a fast cw CQ is heard! Local computer guru Shawn Ackerman has his (Nokia, I suspect) cell phone ringer set to CQ. BT Mike KBØZBE just took the drill to his pickup and installed a dual-band whip. Fellow student Bill NØJBS was a partner in crime on the deal. They can get into teh 22/82 machine from the Vo-Tech at Goodland. Bruce KØBJ is showing his yellow streak -- he got a glass-mount dualbander at Kearney (gotta negotiate with the XYL, ya know...) BT Gerry KBØLGX visited the Bay Area of California to help his sister-in-law and family settle in from France. He was out there during the big rains so maybe he didn't get to do all the things he'd hoped on. BT Tom NØXNO has a new rig! He's just got a new service HT and WOB is included on the dial. BT Bruce KØBJ has word that an article he edited for N5ROJ has been accepted for QST. ROJ found an old toy key w. buzzer and sounder at a flea market, as pictured in Up Front on page 21 of August '97 QST. James' article tells about some fun correspondence he got as a result of the photo. BT Jim KGØPI found a neat program on the web called PED. It emulates the ham contest logger CT which he, KØBJ and KØFJ use. This one generates cw callers -- a few or LOTS -- which you can practice your contesting or DXpeditioning skills on. The program is a Japanese invention, and Jim says you can choose to have a horde of JAs calling you, or a horde of the whole world. Neat!NEXT
MEETING February 12*** 7:00PM CST*** Permanent time change. Topics include weather spotting and a possible radio event with the Garden City club to Mt. Sunflower. Program is a video on the first amateur transatlantic QSOs in the early '20s.
