CHRISTMAS PARTY A good number turned out for the meeting under reasonable weather. Kathy N0XNJ had a nice assortment of prizes, and the Midwest Division donated a Repeater Directory and Help for New Hams. The video of Doc Brinkley's big radio operations (and OTHER operations) brought nods of remembrance from some of the old-timers at the gathering. As promised, business was conducted.....

CLBY NODE ANTENNA The club voted to replace the ice-damaged Isopole at the node site (KLBY transmitter) with a Diamond Model 500 144/440 Mhz dual-band antenna. Cost of the antenna and climb by WB0OQJ Andy Goossen is <$500. Darel WA0GBN suggested that packet users in particular consider an additional gift to TARC; he and several members have given an extra $15 or so to the club. THANKS! The antenna is in place and working well, exhibiting low SWR on both bands and 8+ dBi on 145 Mhz, 11+ dBi on 440. Andy took up a 2M HT for comms with GBN SEG and VJR on the ground, but ran out of batteries at 400'! "Armstrong (throatstrong?) HTs" did the job! Along with the missing top element, the Isopole had a bullet hole!

UPCOMING VHF DX PROGRAM We will be having a special treat sometime in the next few months. Lauren Libby KX0O from Colorado Springs was one of 4 US hams to push back the 'tobacco curtain' of Cuba, participating in a VHF contest from the island with a number of Habaneros. Their story appeared in December QST and other ham literature. Sometime this year (details to be worked out), Lauren will come to a meeting and present a slide show of the experience. This should be of special interest to Technician types, as most of the operation was on Technician-available bands. Stand by.

SWAPFEST PROGRESS The swapfest committee met and Kathy N0XNJ is chairman, while Gerry KB0LGX is the contact person. The flyer is being mailed to affiliated clubs and hams in the area, and vendors have been contacted with details of the March 18 event. K4VX has approved our application and we are an ARRL approved hamfest.

EXPAND NEWSLETTER? Lew K4VX, Midwest Division Director, produces a monthly newsletter for Affiliated Clubs containing national and division (KS NE IA MO) news. The latest issue is included with this newsletter. Unfortunately, the Division News comes out just a few days after our newsletter each month. We could also reintroduce the crossword puzzles, or cartoons, and plan to do a member OR repeater user directory every 3-4 months. Photocopying costs the club .05/side. Let's discuss the value of these items at the meeting and determine what to send.

BANDSCAN BT Darel WA0GBN and Pat are planning to trek to the Mecca of ham operators -- Dayton, Ohio for the Hamvention April 28-30. They plan to also check out Elvis' pelvis and other scenic wonders while back east. K0BJ will probably be driving to Dayton as well, and is wondering if there would be enough hams interested in going to take a vanload. The drive is about 16 hours, and room would be about $25/person/night for Friday & Saturday. See Bruce if interested. BT No Trojans made it to the New Year's Open House at WB0DRL near Salina. However exTrojans Dale and Nancy N0KQX/OXQ were at the well-attended event. The DRL gang is getting back into contesting activities more, and not doing as many balloon-transmitter launches. BT Robin Therlin of Colby wants to obtain a ham ticket, partly to keep in touch with her dad in Mississippi. Hubby Brian Thomas, KQLS program director, is interested too. They have copies of the ARRL training videos. BT Bruce K0BJ managed to blow up the XMIT control circuitry in his TS830 while attempting to interface his newly-wired Ten Tec 6M xverter. Luckily, the problem was traced to 3 transistors which were replaced after a weeks' wait for parts. KF0MJ's rig was used for a weekly sked in the interim. BT Joel Nickols, harmonic of N0XNO, and Christina Barrera, foster sister of KB0MBS, played in the CHS band Christmas concert. BT Perennial History Day participant Sonya Cooper of Hoxie HS is doing an a/v program this year on the Philippines in WW II. SHe's checking into doing some interviewing of Filipinos via HF radio. Fortunately, the USA has a third-party agreement with DU-land. BT Jon KB0MBS continues to rake in some good QSOs on the RS10 satellite. He's up to 20 states and recently snagged VE8EV in Inuvik, NW Territories near northern Alaska. BT Best wishes to Darel WA0GBN and family. His mother is ill in Wichita, and recovering from head injuries from a fall. BT W0TQ from Concordia sent a packet message advising he and N0GJ have troubleshot the old Trojan Spec Comm repeater than N0KSC bought from us at the swapfest last year. They found 5 defective padder capacitors in the rx front end, a broken coil in the helical resonator, a bad crystal filter and a bad padder in the tx PA. They report it now has .2uv@20dB sensitivity, excellent squelch, and it happily loafs at 35 watts on 146.34/94 in Concordia. Their VHF Engineering repeater is going to Beloit and they plan to link the two machines. Congratulations to the Concordia club! BT KB0MBS and K0BJ are excited about the launch of RS15, a new Russian Mode A Transponder (2M uplink, 10M down). It is in a high orbit, which should give them a good chance at Hawaii for satellite WAS, as well as good DX. Even Worked All Continents should be possible, with brief footprints into Africa and good coverage to eastern Siberia.

NEXT MEETING JANUARY 12 ** CCC GOVE ROOM ** Note the meeting location, which is two doors north of the Decatur Room. This will be our spring semester meeting venue. Mobile Command Post outfitting and swapfest plans will be major topics.
