JUNE 1998

MT. SUNFLOWER Jack KB0VUS did a great job scanning and printing the KØS certificates for those hams contacting the expedition. So far 102 certificates have been sent, with a few more requests coming in each week.

NINE RUN RUN MAY 9 The 10K run had ideal weather, although just a little windy, but the participant numbers were down to a couple dozen or less. Patti N0OXP was at the start/finish line, while Mike K0FJ took Mile 1 and 6, Allen K0MXU handled mile 2 and then returned to the finish line, Larry KC0BNV was at mile 3, David N0SEG took mile 4 and Bruce K0BJ was at mile 5. Dave had battery problems and got backup from Larry. Murphy also visited Bruce, who had a flat on his van at FIke Park and got a quick air-up from Mike before he and Dave left for their posts, after the start. THis is a fun event to work on and the participants receive 9 Run Run t-shirts.

CO-HAMFEST WITH SCOTT CITY? The Sandhills club is tentatively planning a September 13 swapfest in Scott City and is wondering if we'd be interested in doing this with them. Since we didn't do one this year, there may be some demand for an event out this way, and sharing the load would be good for all of us. This will be a good item for discussion at our meeting. Bring your ideas, pro and con.

QUARTERLY MEETINGS? Attendance at recent meetings has been pretty thin. A number of years ago, the club met quarterly and had good turnouts. When some of teh new Techs came in, we had enough interest to meet monthly and have bene doing so for quite a few years. Is it time to go back to quarterly, or bimonthly, meetings? Would YOU make more of an effort to make less frequent meetings? If you're not making the June meeting, let someone know your thoughts.

FIELD DAY The big event is coming up June 27-28 at Phillips Park. With the weather the way it's been, it's hard to know how much harvest will interfere this year. The new scoring of RTTY contacts as separate from cw will mean lots of chances to work the same stations three times per band. (Will N1NH be 45A this year??). K0BJ will bring his CT2200 RTTY demodulator and KG0PI will have his IC751 which loves the rtty mode. Please plan on enjoying this year's Field Day, which should be pretty perky with the good band conditions coming along on both HF and VHF.

BANDSCAN BT Shawn KC0CVS and XYL took a beating on their car from hail in the big May storm. Insurance is covering that, but their landlady is not going to fix the roof for a while so they're moving back into town soon. BT Jon KB0MBS is headed to Pittsburgh PA along with some other CHS Tech students to participate in the national Tech Olympiad. BT Gary WD0AVA has our 440 repeater and is working on tuning and securing the proper 'elements' for our channel assignment. BT Sonya KB0YFO is spending the summer in Hoxie and again working at the bank. Se and her OM will be returning to Newton and her junior year at Bethel when the summer afternoons start cooling down. BT Bruce and Jon K0BJ/KB0MBS spent part of an afternoon realigning FarmDayta dishes for Galaxy 3R, DTN's replacement for their service on Galaxy4 that took the Big Bite last month.

NEXT MEETING JUNE 11 7PM CDT THOMAS HALL NORTON ROOM Standby on 2m for venue change in case Thomas Hall is closed. We'll probably meet at Helen Frahm's, 1015 Maize Road, if need be. Meeting frequency and Field Day will be a couple of the main items. Summer meeting venue will also be discussed.
