SUCCESSFUL VE TESTING
A recent 'full service' VE Test, made possible by courtesy of Norm KXØL who came up from Scott City, got local CHS student Keith Ellis the call KCØCVT, while CCC student Shawn Shively pulled down KCØCVS. Taking advantage of the General class exam session were Scott KBØWPY and Matt KBØYFN Mentzer, who passed easily and now have those extensive HF privileges. An XYL from McCook didn't pass the Tech written but still has alot of time on her Novice CSCE. Congratulations to the new and upgraded hams!MT. SUNFLOWER EXPEDITION
The Sandhills ARC is joining us for an expedition to the highest point in Kansas, near Weskan, on the weekend of May 2. A number of hams from both clubs are planning to take tents, generators, rigs and antennas (why does this sound ALOT like Field Day?) and make an outing of it from Friday evening through Sunday afternoon. We've been issued the prestigious 1 X 1 callsign KØS ("Kansans On Sunflower"?) for this operation, which will be plugged in QST and Worldradio. The Sandhills group logs in CT with laptops just like we do, and we should be ready for the crowds looking for our special call, QSL and certificate. Although the SHARC members are bringing a big 9-man tent, we need to pray for nice mild wx to make those night shifts leisurely! If you're interested in participatingm, let KØBJ or ACØE in Garden City know, so you can be put in the loop on planning.DAYTON, ANYONE?
KØBJ is driving to Dayton May 14, and would welcome someone to split driving and motel room. Bruce plans to leave the Hamvention midmorning Sunday, in time to make his niece's graduation Sunday in Topeka.MIDWEST/DAKOTA DIVISION CONVENTION
South Sioux City, NE is the scene for the combined ARRL division convention May 29-30. The Marina Inn is on the banks of the Missouri River and special guests this year are ARRL EVP Dave Sumner K1ZZ, and QRP guru and author Adrian Weiss WØRSP. It's a fair journey from Colby but a 'different' and rewarding convention.BANDSCAN
BT Jake KBØZIA now has a dualband antenna in his car. He's also working on getting a 'no-name' brick amp off his father's work bench up and running to boost his HT's output. Seems to have no affect on the output at present; maybe the input circuit needs to be tweaked down fron the 150 Mhz business band. BT Jim KGØPI is having fun with his pocket Morse trainer. He's just discovered a way to upload ASCII text from computer files into the machine, to make the 'non-random' practice more varied, as well as verifiable. Jim, with this weapon you should be ready for that Extra CW exam real soon. BT Bruce KØBJ has been enjoying some casual contest work in recent weeks. A magical Friday evening of the ARRL DX CW contest netted 29 countries on 80M; quite an opening for Bruce. The next night didn't have the magic. The CQ 160M SSB contest was also good for some fun QSOs, but a bout with high SWR in teh wee hours Sunday surprised BJ. In the morning he discovered that high winds had blown his chicken-wire counterpoise into the inverted L! BT There's a chance of getting a good site for our 440 repeater if a couple things work out. There may be some updated info on this at the meeting.
