KØRXT SK Trojans were saddened to hear of the death of Fleck May 3 at the Country Club. He had been improving and was getting around town on his own, but his virus-weakened heart gave out. K0MXU WA0GBN N0SEG WB0TQE K0CVY K0BJ K0FJ N0TES KB0LGX were among the attendees at his funeral the following Thursday, and N0XNO led the procession to the cemetery. Bruce K0BJ spoke for a few minutes at the funeral, recalling some of the electronics and dental pranks Fleck had pulled over the years. The graveside ceremonies included Masonic and military recognitions. Fleck was a unique person and K0RXT's antics and signal will be missed.

MT. SUNFLOWER . The KØS expedition came off May 1-3, although not as smoothly as envisioned. Power supply problems, missing hardware, a major solar flare and personnel schedule conflicts complicated things, but a good time was had by all nonetheless. A count isn't available yet but probably 400 or more QSOs were make all around the US and as far away as New Zealand and the Cook Islands. Friday evening saw K0BJ N0QAT KG0PI KB0WPY and KB0YFN manning the big 20 x 20 foot tent and using a LW and Spider for QSOs. Scott and Matt had good luck running stations on 20m ssb, when the tent wasn't flapping away from a rain squall pushing through! Planned generator power fell through when it was discovered the Mobil Command Post's Honda unit was apparently pinched in a broken glass incident a couple weeks ago that was thought to be just vandalism. The guys used Bruce's van battery, and Jim supplied light with his Blazer since nobody managed to bring a lantern! Saturday morning WA0VJR and WA0GBN came on the scene but a solar flare killed HF propagation for about 40 minutes and left it wobbly for hours. After lunch Norm KX0L from Scott City, our latest examination helper, and XYL also showed and shortly after the Garden CIty crew of K0EQH KA0RID KG0MY KB0PJU and N0CPC arrived. N0SEG and Anthony came by in the evening also. By 11:30pm Saturday all Trojans had left teh highest real estate in Kansas, but the SHARC boys kept things going til noon Sunday.

Alot of hams were laying in wait for the K0S special event call thanks to QST and Worldradio coverage. We've been getting requests averaging about 15/day and KB0VUS and K0BJ hope to have the certificates ready for desktop production in the next few days. While there were plenty of snafus, this was a fun event for the folks able to attend and it was nice to get to know the Sandhills club a little better.

NINE RUN RUN Saturday MAY 9 The 10K race will take place midmorning and we're still looking for some additional help. K0MXU KC0BNV and K0FJ are helping and could use at least a couple more hams with HTs. If you can help please contact one of these hams. KSNK will NOT be able to film us for a station ID at theis event -- they'll stay in touch for another chance.

MIDWEST/DAKOTA DIVISION CONVENTION South Sioux City, NE is the scene for the combined ARRL division convention May 29-30. The Marina Inn is on the banks of the Missouri River and special guests this year are ARRL EVP Dave Sumner K1ZZ, and QRP guru and author Adrian Weiss WØRSP. It's a fair journey from Colby but a 'different' and rewarding convention.

BANDSCAN BT Welcome to David AA0FI. He's moved to Burlington from Pratt. Dave is N0ZTM's brother-in-law and Elmer. Hope you join our club David. BT Shawn KCØCVS recently traveled to Scott City and was chatting on 2M with new acquaintance KXØL. Pretty soon Shawn realized Norm was one of the VEs at the session where he got his Tech ticket. BT KØBJ's FT1000MP came back from Yaesu all fixed up, so Bruce's playtoy is back on the air. BT Bill NØJBS and Mike KBØZBE have graduated from NWK Tech in Goodland in Comm. Tech. Bill was surprised how broad and detailed the field, and instruction at Goodland, were. BT KØFJ and KBØLGX are having their own private around-the-clock DXpedition. This one involves SWLing the SKEDA telemetry system on the city water wells, while the main water tower is being refurbished. Sounds like a great way to be radioing constantly. The action goes on for a couple more weeks. BT The hams at Mt. Sunflower noticed the slick vertical Norm KX0L uses. It's packaged to easily break down and carry to Field Day or whatever. The mountaineers also noticed it pays to keep your batteries charged -- when they forgot to routinely run the van which was supplying battery power for the rigs, they'd start getting bad signal reports, which cleared up as soon as the alternator got going again! BT The solar flare did give the K0S team one benefit; a nifty auroral display was visible in the northern sky Saturday night. The very dark skies around Mt. Sunflower helped visibility but the waxing moon interfered. Just about when some vertical rays started developing in the display, the aurora collapsed. BT A big thanks to John WA0CAL for supplying a wad of hot dogs, buns, relish and beans to the Mt. Sunflower expeditioners. The Trojan participants enjoyed Saturday lunch and K0BJ and the Garden City crew feasted on this grub Saturday night. Thanks John, and sorry you didn't make the expedition. BT Darel WA0GBN is doing some ham teaching for a middle school class in Goodland. Included is a repeater demo and some digital photos of the Mt. SUnflower expedition, sent via email.

NEXT MEETING MAY 14 7PM CDT THOMAS HALL NORTON ROOM Nine Run Run and Field Day will be a couple of the main items. Summer meeting venue will also be discussed.
