McCOOK CLUB STARTING UP Paul NØTM and 15 McCook area hams met recently and are forming the McCook ARC. Paul sez he had the misfortune of being elected president! They are growing fast with a membership of 31 at present. They're settling in on a regular meeting night, and are leaning toward Tuesdays. Good luck to this new club.

NEW VENUE FOR HAM LUNCH The Thursday noon Ham Lunch crowd has decided to switch to Sirloin Stockade. Actually, we had met there breifly in the past. Aside from change for change's sake, it'll let the uninformed occifers uniformed officers in the club attend when they can. Come early -- the wait sometimes gets up to 5 minutes after about 12:05.

BIGHORN MUSEUM SUFFERS FROM BIG BLOW The nasty windstorm the end of October knocked down some fall crops here was a little fiercer on the eastern Colorado plains. It took down the big 100' tower at the Bighorn museum in Genoa, and messed up windows and awnings there as well. Don KØPV (exKØPVI) advises that it will be at least spring til they're ready to reopen.

FLECK's BOWTIE SUFFERS TOO While the Genoa tower loss was occurring, KØRXT's celebrated "ultra-dummy load" HF5B Butterfly beam succombed to the wind. It managed to mess up his pole tower a little, but Fleck has it squared away and is looking to replace the beam. He's thinking of going with an A3 or similar class antenna this time.

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PARTY AT SIRLOIN STOCKADE DEC. 12

Once again our regular meeting night in December will see Trojans and others gathering at the Stockade in Colby at 6:00pm CST. We'll hit the food pileup about 6:30. By popular demand (?), we'll continue the White Elephant gift exchange, and have a few other surprises and fol-de-rol for the evening's festivities.

NEW HAMS AND NEW PRIVILEGES AT VE TEST. A "full" VE test session was held in late October, thanks to KØPV bringing an Extra Class VE from eastern Colorado. Larry NØZTM breezed to General by passing the written, after having been foiled at Field Day when the 3-man Extra VE team couldn't all show. Lavon Zielinski KBØWIW passed the written too and ACED the 13 wpm code test -- now we know what she and Don did on their honeymoon!. Mike Stavish became the third NWS Goodland employee to be licensed when he passed his tech and has been assigned KBØYUL. Congratulations to all.

NEW SECTION MANAGER'S CALL SIGN When Gary Bliss NZØM of Osborne resigned as ARRL Section Manager for Kansas, Mike Brungardt WAØSXR of Newton was appointed to fill the position. Now Mike is sporting a new Gate 2 Vanity Call - KØTQ. The Section Manager is responsible for all the Field Organization activities in the section -- National Traffic System nets, ARES emergency planning, Official Observing activities, bulletins, and all the other volunteer activities sponsored by ARRL. Congratulations on the new call Mike!

BANDSCAN BT Scott KBØWPY and Matt KBØYFN have been taking advantage of autumn's dramatic temperature changes to shoot some 2M DX. With nothing more that their vertical at 30 feet, they have had some good tropo openings to the norht and south. Of course with Scott being Grand Potentate of Goodland NWS, they have an inside track on watching for potential openings, if not actually ordering them up on demand. BT Congratulations/condolances to Tom NØXNO who lost his bid to unseat the incumbent sheriff, but who got 45% of the vote and conducted an innovative and clean campaign. Your service to the community is appreciated, Tom. BT While we're at the bottom of the sunspot cycle, there are SOME good DX days. Bruce KØBJ has been making some QSOs to Europe and Asia on 20 and 15 recently, including a cw QSO into Taichung, Taiwan, the hometown of his niece. She and his nephew were married there a few years ago, after Jean met her while spending a few weeks in BV-land with General Dynamics helping the Taiwanese build F-16s. BT KLBY's engineer Bernie Schmid was featured in a recent KTN tv network promotional newspaper sent to western Kansans. Bernie's responsibilities now include work at Garden City and the microwave links in the area. He's a real help to the club, letting us get access to the transmitter site on those occasions when the CLBY packet node is on the fritz. BT Keith Ellis, Colby HS sophomore, is cracking the books working toward a ticket. KBØMBS reports that Keith may be interested in cw and the DX bands. BT Fleck KØRXT has been busy reworking things after the winds took down his HF antennas. One leg of his 75M dipole snapped, and his pole tower had a kink that needed some straightening. Things are about to go back together, although at press time he hadn't yet decided which HF yagi to order to replace the "bowtie". To top it off, his computer monitor croaked so the dreaded Mr. Murphy has been staying overtime at the RXT QTH. BT We have been doubling up mailed and emailed copies of the Harmonic to those with email access. Starting with this issue, we WILL NOT send a mailed copy to those persons, unless you specifically request it. We'll be glad to send that way too, just let NØXNJ or KØBJ know. BT Congratulations to Don KØPV, ex-KØPVI, and all the other hams who have changed their calls in the Vanity Call program including Section Manager KØTQ. BT NØTES KFØMJ and KØBJ are all singing in the college/community production of the Christmas portion of Handel's Messiah. The Pride of the Prairie Orchestra will accompany the chorus and soloists in the Dec. 15 production.

NEXT MEETING NOVEMBER 14 7:30 pm CDT ***CCC Gove Room*** Note the 1996-7 venue at Gove Room, midway down the west corridor in Thomas Hall. The October meeting got cancelled with all the fall activities, so we're a little behind. There'll be a report on possible repeater controller change, consideration of whether to pursue a 440 Mhz repeater system, and discussion on packet backboning. We'll also discuss the 1997 slate of officers -- we normally draw this up in October, vote in November and install in December, so we're already behind the curve.

The Trojan Amateur Radio Club is a general interest educational and public service ham club. We maintain a 2M FM repeater, packet equipment and a station at the NWS in Goodland. Dues are $10/annually, payable to Kathy NØXNJ, 1872 County Road 15, Colby KS 67701. Material from the Trojan Harmonic may be freely copied; attribution is appreciated. News and free email subscription requests to KØBJ, PO Box DX, Colby KS 67701 or bfrahm@colby.ixks.com
