NOVEMBER 1997
MEETING AT NWS
The idea to have a meeting at NWS in Goodland has been put on hold until sometime in the spring. They have some new equipment they'd like to show off, and it will be just the thing to get us in the groove for weather spotting season..MBT & XNJ IN VEGAS
Gregg and Kathy enjoyed a trip to Las Vegas this fall, won in a Jaycees raffle. Kathy reports they had alot of fun and didn't lose TOO much wages, but were glad to get back home too.KØBJ VICE DIRECTOR 2 MORE YEARS
Bruce was unopposed in the nominations for Midwest Vice Director and will serve as Vice Director through 1999. While in Omaha following his mom's broken leg, BJ discovered his yet-unsigned nominating petition was due a couple short days later. Thanks to KØFJ, KØBJ's XYL and KGØPI, ten signatures were wangled to get Bruce kosher. Special thanks went to Fred WDØEBJ and Allen KØMXU who drove from Dresden and Hoxie to add their names to the list of dummies nominating Big Joke.KØRXT
Fleck has been improving steadily at Lantern Park Manor and is headed to Denver soon to get a mobile rig -- er, a dialysis unit for home use. This should let him live at home conveniently under Lee's watchful eye (rolling pin?). We're glad you're making progress Fleck!CREAMCAN CAPER?
A good crowd enjoyed our annual sausage, kitchen sink, etc. etc. cookout on the shores of Villa Hi Lake on a cool September afternoon. The burner we borrowed didn't have the BTUs of Lee Strickler's burner, and there was a little extra socializing time available while waiting for things to really get rolling inside the creamcan. As always, nobody left hungry.NEW TOWERS
Club members have been sprouting new towers, with mixed results. KØFJ has 40+' of Rohn 25 up at his new Cherry Street QTH. His TH6 and 2m antennas are on top, and the view to all directions is good, with an especially nice slope from NW through NE. Mike, KØBJ KGØPI NØOXP and NØTES worked on the installation, which included a bizarre hula dance with the TA36 at the top of the tower, trying to get it out of guys AND right side up at the same time. KØFJ and KØBJ added an A3WS WARC band yagi to Bruce's hybrid Rohn25/tilt-over base tower by stacking it on top of the existing TH5. This self-supported 43 footer WAS a good performer til it peeled over in the big 80mph October winds! Bruce is still lining up materials and fighting corn harvest schedules, but hopes to have the old system replaced with a 60-80' aluminum tower, guyed with Phillystran this time. He found a tower from the local sign company that uses the same base as his old tilt-over, which had originally belonged to Fleck KØRXT's brother Charlie WAØPMS. Luckily his antennas made out pretty well in the mishap -- a few bucks of new tubing and some light encouragement to some slightly bent pipes made them look reasonable.BANDSCAN
BT KBØLGX and Jim Giesenhagen have had a busy October constructing a metal building west of the CoOp elevator in Colby. The guys are done and have a slick shop area as well as spaces that are being rented to third parties. Some other of our club members have taken part in this project at times. BT KØBJ and family are proud owners of a new (to them) 1995 Ford Explorer. Somehow Bruce finagled rig rights and has a slick "holeless" mount for his TS50 just in front of the center console and is running his Spider mobile whip. Some work remains to clean up RFI from the fuel pump and other sources, but already the rig has provided some fun QSOs, especially since Bruce is QRT at the home QTH with antenna problems. It's also been his first cw mobile ever, using a Kent touch keyer built from a kit. BT KGØPI's KAM Plus digital mode modem decided to go flaky the morning of the CQWW RTTY contest the last weekend of September. After scratching their heads a while Jim and KØBJ decided a switching transistor was blown. A call to Kantronics led to the suggestion they rob the VHF PTT switch, which had the same specs. This put Jim's KAM back on the air. As luck would have it, this was the same day they were working on KØFJ's tower. Quite a hammy day for all involved! BT Robbin Bryant XYL of NØZTM made it to Dennen Field for the Colby/Pratt football playoff. She visited friends from Pratt who attended, and also chummed some with Patti NØOXP. Since she has fessed up to cheering for Pratt at the game, the Colby Trojans are planning a special "welcome gift" for Robbin at next summer's Field Day! BT KØBJ just added 75/30/17/12 meter band resonators to his Spider antenna. The band flexibility is worth the expense. BT Tom NØXNO has been spending off-days from the PD working harvest at the KØBJ family farm, now that his own harvest is in. Since Bruce is at the dryer in Halford and Tom's on the grain cart, they haven't had much chance to swap lies.NEXT
MEETING November 13 7:30pm CST CCC Norton Room This is the SE classroom in Thomas Hall. The big topics are 440 repeater, bylaws revision, and officer nominatioins. We voted to become a 'normal' affiliated club, not a school club, which necessitates a bylaws update. Our program will be a Kenwood promo on their sharp new TMV7 dual band rig, which KØFJ is a proud owner of.The Trojan Amateur Radio Club is a general interest educational and public service ham club.
