OCTOBER 1996

KBØYFO AT BETHEL COLLEGE Sonya is on campus at Haury Hall, and has a loaner FT207 440 HT from Allen KØMXU. It links to the Newton 2M machine. Sonya's address is: Bethel College, Student Box 228, 300 E. 27th St., North Newton 67117-0531.

TS700 AT KBØMBT Gregg and Kathy have a Kenwood TS700 2 meter all-mode rig on loan from their friend Dave KAØKCI. Dave is from KC, recently moved from Salina, and was the guy with the GPS receiver at the last early-bird swapmeet dinner. The KC Gang is hoping to get more VHF activity stirred up in DM99. Scott KBØWPY and Matt KBØYFN may be making some noises of their own from Goodland on VHF, if their plans pan out.

Kenwood Report NOW BEING RECEIVED The Trojan ARC is now on the mailing list for the Kenwood Report. This is a periodical news sheet with news of general ham interest, as well as reviews and promos on Kenwood products. They sent back issues of all Reports for the three years or so they've been printing. We MAY be receiving occasional product videos as part of being on their list. We'll have the news sheets at club meetings for anyone interested.

QRX FOR FIELD DAY RESULTS November QST hasn't hit the streets as of press time, so Field Day coverage will appear in next month's Harmonic. It won't be a banner year for us, but reading about all the exploits around the nation will be fun.

LOOK FOR ARTICLE IN DECEMBER QST Bruce KØBJ submitted a manuscript to QST after their family trip to Europe this summer. The story was too long to make the cut, but a portion of it, describing BJ and KBØMBS getting active on satellites, has been accepted for publication in December, or possibly January QST. It's called Father and Son Satellites and will appear in the New Ham Companion section.

EMAIL LIST REMINDER This is the second month the Trojan Harmonic is available on request via email. If interested, send subscribe/unsubscribe requests to bfrahm@colby.ixks.com. We also have a second list with W1AW bulletins, ARRL Letter, Midwest Division News, and some local gossip, which is available at the same address. At least a couple of you are having problems with the cancelled zero {ALT-0-2-1-6} character on your email readers. Netscape and some other readers handle this ok; for the time being we'll leave those characters IN the email version. If you have strong feelings either way, comment to above address.

By the way KFØMJ has been working on the City of Colby Web Site recently; check it out at thcoks:8000 (temp address)

BANDSCAN BT Jim KGØPI is studying code pretty diligently. He's up to 50% copy on random groups at 25wpm, so he should be ready for the Extra code any time. However he sez he needs quite a bit of leeway for "test jitters". Good luck Jim! BT The oldtimers remember Jim WAØTUS from Rexford. He's more recently AA4VQ from Columbia SC, and has been packeting with GBN MXU and BJ in the recent past. Jim's sister Grace, her husband Jerry and harmonics Alex and Matalin drove to the Rexford HS alumni reunion Labor Day weekend. KØBJ KBØMBS and Janice had them out for pizza Sunday noon. Back in the late 60s Bruce and Jim were good buddies, and it didn't take too long for Grace to lodge in Bruce's eye either...... BT History class may never recover -- KBØVUS KBØMBS Maria Albright (niece of Tom WB9GYI) and Machaela (harmonic of KGØPI) are 4/5 of a team writing and producing a mini-play on Vikings. Suppose they're /maritime mobile in this version? BT Ray KØLZR, the voice of Pierceville, is enjoying a Diamond 6.7dB VHF antenna on his 60' tower, and he's got a new G5RV up and been working lots of cw. When Ray and Butch get together, it's like the blind leading the blind. It's great to hear about his new antennas. BT The Flatlanders ARC has put a 147.90/30 in Sublette. BT Bill NØJBS has started a 2 year course at NWKAVTS in Goodland -- Comm Tech. It's a commute from Oberlin 5 days/week at present, so Bill will be doing some serious mobiling. Among his teachers is Phil KB1CK. Good luck and have fun Bill! BT Someone was peddling $5 Heathkit mugs at the Topeka hamfest. In "Heath lunchbox green", they will bring back memories to those of us who spent time building (and troubleshooting) Griefkits. BT Gregg and Kathy's friend Dave KAØKCI has moved from Salina to KC. He's really getting into the VHF scene there, and is talking about getting a "care package" of loaner VHF gear out to MBT/XNJ. BT K1AR who is one of the developers of PacketCluster, has left CQ for Cerulean Technologies. PacketCluster is coming to Kojak -- police departments are starting to use it in undercover and similar operations! BT Bill W9GMO was an itinerant on the machine for a couple days a while back. He was returning from an American Legion convention out west, and had a repair job at Mid-Continent Mfg. in Colby. BT KFØMJ and NØOXP have new wheels -- a '96 Sable LS with 17k miles. The old Merc was a little small for Mike's kilowatt-sized chassis, and the "new" one has some nice features, including a slick green paint job. It involved swapping some radios, but with MJ's penchant for rearranging shacks........ BT KØBJ recently refurbished his old T2X rotator, including adding a CATS quick-connector for the cable. After a ground check, it failed to rotate the antenna once installed, but with some help from KBØMBS in the shack, it was discovered the housing didn't like its "final tightening".BT

NEXT MEETING OCTOBER 10 7:30 pm CDT ***CCC Gove Room*** Note the 1996-7 venue at Gove Room, midway down the west corridor in Thomas Hall. There'll be a report on possible repeater controller change, and discussion on packet backboning.

The Trojan Amateur Radio Club is a general interest educational and public service ham club. We maintain a 2M FM repeater, packet equipment and a station at the NWS in Goodland. Dues are $10/annually, payable to Kathy NØXNJ, 1872 County Road 15, Colby KS 67701. Material from the Trojan Harmonic may be freely copied; attribution is appreciated. News and free email subscription requests to KØBJ, PO Box DX, Colby KS 67701 or bfrahm@colby.ixks.com
