A NEW CROP OF LICENSEES
Area hams and folks continue to upgrade and get licensed at a good clip. Scott Mentzer KBØWPY passed 5wpm to upgrade to Tech Plus, and the same evening his son Matt took the elements to reach that same level. His call is KBØYFN. Sonya Cooper of Hoxie also passed the Tech, and is KBØYFO. Sonya is going on to Bether College in Newton, where she should have the chance to be active on the 2M & 70cm repeaters .FOXHUNT/COOKOUT AND GOLF TOURNEY
September 15 is the day for the fall foxhunt and Creamcan Special cookout. Gerry KBØLGX has agreed to be the fox for this one. As in the past, we'll meet at the north CCC parking lot at 2pm CT to get instructions. Using KGØPI's creamcan, we'll throw stuff on the fire about 4:30 and plan to eat around 5:30. This will take place at Villa Hi pond in KØRXT's neighborhood. The golf scramble will be held some day soon, and coordination will be done on 2M. We know of KBØWPY KBØNYC KØRXT KØBJ KBØLGX KFØMJ that are interested. If you are too, let one of them know.
VANITY CALL GATE 2 OPENING SOON
There may be a big influx of activity at FCC when Extra Class licensees become eligible to change their callsigns for a $30 fee. FCC has announced Gate 2 opening day as September 23. Among the applicants is soon-to-be-ex-KFØMJ Mike, who has his list of new call choices ready.MORE WAØDAV PARTS
Dean Strain's widow Laura Lee dropped off some parts, tubes, etc to KG0PI. She found them around Dean's shack. We'll have them at an upcoming meeting, then save any leftovers for the next swapfest.CONDOLANCES TO AREA HAMS
A big clubwide hug goes to Doc WØLOW on the loss of his XYL Ada. Doc is the elder statesman ham of Colby. In the note to the club thanking us for flowers, harmonic Becky WØVGE points out that six Jain descendants are licensed hams. Our thoughts are also with the Salina community after the murder of WØCY's XYL, daughter and great-grandson. The club contributed to the reward fund. KBØQNB of Formoso is a suspect.EMAIL DISTRIBUTION OF HARMONIC
KØBJ has developed an email list which, with this issue, he's using to get the Trojan and Midwest Division ARRL newsletter, and other bulletins of interest out ASAP. There is a second list for non-Trojan comp recipients of the Trojan Harmonic. Recipients who are non-Trojans: we hope you get something of use from this. You may quote from the Harmonic; attribution is appreciated but not mandatory. If you have addition or deletion requests to either of these lists, or news, please contact bfrahm@colby.ixks.comNEW SALT MINE FOR KBØMBT
Gregg is changing jobs and is now working at Cummins Mid America on generators. The job involves travel, and he's doing both electronic and engine maintenance and repairs. NWS Goodland and KLBY are among the more local sites on Gregg's responsibility list. Kathy NØXNJ continues at K-N Communications. Now the pair will have something to TALK about when they get home from work!KØBJ & KBØMBS VISIT G/GW
Bruce and Jon, along with Janice visited Barrie, whom many of you have met, in England this summer. They also spent a week on the south coast of Wales and had fun seeing castles and enjoying the beach. All survived driving on the left and eating at pubs. Bruce had the TS-50/Spider whip along and was active as M/KØBJ and MW/KØBJ. He also eyeballed his first European satellite DX station, G4CUO in Newark, about 25 miles from Barrie. Dave had invited 4 of his satellite buddies over to meet the Yankee operator.UPCOMING EVENTS

BT Gerry KBØLGX has been enjoying 10M ssb, even at this super-low stage of the sunspot cycle. The club's beam is fixed toward the east, and consequently he sez he has alot of North Carolina stations in the log. BT Paul NØTM has sent some Rocky Mountain VHF+ newsletters. There's some interesting reading in them, and they'll be at the next meeting for anyone interested. BT Jim KGØPI is enjoying the WF1B software at his rtty station. The program allows use of the mouse to click on callsigns and to select buffers to transmit, and it's possible to do a contest or even ragchew to some extent, without touching the keyboard! Jim's bitten by the DX bug. He has a QSL from French Polynesia that looks great, and got a chuckle out of getting a QSL, self-addressed envelope and $1 from a Colombian ham! He and KØBJ scored #10 Multiop in North America in January's RTTY Roundup, thereby making the Top Ten Box! BT Ham wannabe Josh Turvy has been cracking the books and plans to test for Tech soon. He has at least one good incentive - one birthday present this summer was a new IC-Z1A ready to go on 2m/70cm! BT The McCook Repeater Association has launched a newsletter, QRV McCOOK, and hopes to get a general interest ham club going. Right now the MRA meets Saturdays 7AM CT at Arbys on West B. The premier edition, all 6 pages, was produced by Paul NØTM. Good luck McCook hams! BT The club voted at the August meeting to go ahead with plans for the annual March Trojan swapfest. The plan is to stay with the Coin & Gun show weekend and the National Guard Armory. BT Chet NSØO is the proud owner of a new (to him) Yaesu FT-757GX, like we used to have at Field Day. He and Butch WAØVJR had a swaptable at the Salina hamfest, but sometimes we end up buying as much as we sell.... BT Jack KBØVUS and Jon KBØMBS tried to quiz out of English 2 over the summer. They fell short of making it but have some work for the school year out of the way. They both have two computer classes, trig and chemistry among other subjects. BT Fleck KØRXT is back in the AV room at CCC. Now that he's a BIG WHEEL at CCC, he arranged the Gove Room for our meetings for THE WHOLE YEAR! BT Dave NØTES is a senior at CHS, and is on track to graduate at the end of semester. LOOK OUT if you're on the streets of Colby on weekday afternoons; Dave is on patrol with the CPD. BT The Goodland guys have a Monday evening net on the 147.03 repeater, at 7pm MT. The noisy scanner problem is apparently gone for good; the XYL of the owner heard about the troubles it was causing the repeater, and there has been no birdie on 147.63 since!. BT KFØMJ and KØBJ played around in the IARU contest in July, which also served as the second World Radiosport Team Competition in San Francisco. This was an event where 52 2-person teams worldwide operated from similar, 100 watt-to-a-tribander stations in the San Fran bay area, to make the contest as "even" as possible. The stations all had 'weird', short calls: K6A to K6Z and W6A to W6Z. Awards were offered and Mike will receive a letter opener for making at least 25 QSOs (he managed 34). Bruce qualified for a deck of WRTC playing cards by working all 52 stations, plus a t-shirt for being in the top 300 working 1x1 calls. KRØY who learned contesting at the QTH of Midwest ARRL Director Lew K4VX, was on the winning team. BT Larry NØZTM and family enjoyed a vacation in California. They saw alot of 6-land, starting in the Bay Area and continuing to Disneyland. They even got to Travis AFB, where a friend got them on base and into a C-5 Galaxy. Larry and his son spent the Labor Day weekend visiting the ham relatives in Pratt. BT Fleck KØRXT showed at ham lunch the other day with a video of the tornado north of Colby earlier this summer. This was a storm to miss! It started out as a slow summer for spotting, but there have been some notable pickups in activity! BT KØMXU and KØBJ took Allen's car to the Salina hamfest. Bruce latched onto a Touch Keyer kit; it's a little 5 x 5 x 2 cm unit that will go nicely with his TS-50 travel rig. KBØMBT and NØXNJ attended too, and Gregg found a battery eliminator pack for his HT. BT Speaking of battery eliminators, sheriff candidate Tom NØXNO runs mobile with a 'shot' battery, used as a buffer for the constant charging with his cig. lighter plug. Since the supply is pure DC, it works great. BT The Zip Drive at KBØMBS/KØBJ finally is repaired, and we're back to the 'normal' newsletter layout. Sorry for the delay! BT KØBJ and KØRXT's neighbor Don Kready are part of a quartet that sang at the funeral of Fred WDØEBJ's cousin in Dresden a while back. Bruce, Fred and his XYL Hank enjoyed a bit of an eyeball QSO. BT The Manhattan hams will be involved in an international horse endurance race in Geary County Sep. 21-22. 75 area amateurs will take part in this one.NEXT MEETING SEPTEMBER 12 7:30 pm CDT ***CCC Gove Room*** Note the 1996-7 venue at Gove Room, midway down the west corridor in Thomas Hall. We'll organize the Sept. 15 foxhunt/cookout.
