SEPTEMBER 1997

NO AUGUST MEETING The August meeting was cancelled for lack of warm bodies, and no Harmonic was published due to the editor's absence. Thanks to secretary Kathy NØXNJ and others for spreading the word. Now that school's started we hope to be back in the groove. Plan to attend the meeting Sep. 11.

KØRXT Fleck continues to be in Denver but is hoping to return to Lantern Park Manor in Colby in a week or so. He has total kidney failure and needs frequent dialysis. But he recently got his appetite back and has continued to be "Fleck" when visited by WBØTQE, KØBJ, KØFJ and others. We hope to get up a G5RV or similar ant. for Fleck to be on HF at LPM, and he'll be on the 2m repeater when he gets here.

KØCVY Jim has been home for a while now. He is still real tired, but is making steady progress and should be fully mended after awhile. Jim and XYL Karen WBØNGQ were spotted at the Pizza Hut recently.

JACK'S J-POLE AT COUNTY FAIR

KBØVUS pulled down a blue ribbon at the Thomas County Fair for his 2 meter J-pole. Jack says he and his brother were the only entries in the category, but we still reckon it was the best 4-H project at the entire fair.

KBØLGX HARMONIC Gerry and Laurie Bieker are proud parents of Sarah Jean, born by C section recently. Gerry has bene talking about getting a 10M antenna up to catch the upswign in conditions with the sunspots. Could it be he's looking for an out from diaper detail?

KØBJ's NEW RIG Bruce has grown tired of 'making do' with the wide receiver in his TS50, and got a Yaesu FT1000MP from HRO in Denver. The rig has alot of slick features, but one of BJ's favorites so far is dual receive. It's great in scanning a split pileup to find out where the DX is listening currently. The feature paid off early, as he snagged 5A28 from Libya in a good-sized pileup on 15cw, for a brand new country on his list. It's also handy in eavesdropping on the other mode on the same band, or for stations on a barely open 2nd band. Along with the 1000MP, Bruce sprang for an A3WS 10/17/24 Mhz yagi antenna, which will be a big upgrade for him on those freqs.

MUSICAL CARS AT FJ/OXP/TES QTH Things have got a little confusing (for the rest of us) at the Albers house. TES sold his chickmobile to his mom for a runaround car, and then turned around and bought his dad's pickup. FJ and OXP now have a slick looking new (to them) red Ford Explorer. So if you see the 'wrong' Albers in a familiar looking car, that could be the explanation.

KBØYFO BACK IN COLLEGE Sonya has finished her summer in Hoxie and is back in school at Bethel in Newton, starting her second week. Her email like last year is smc7v@bethelks

She didn't leave studying totally off this summer, as YFO successfully and easily passed her 5WPM code. Just in time for catching the action on 10 meters as the sunspots return. Now Sonya, try to be a good student this year and spend some time studying propagation and code!

CREAMCAN CAPER? It's the time of year to think about a creamcan cookout. With Fleck sidelined from chef duties, we'll have to send in the second string players but should still be able to make a good job of it. Bring your ideas on dates and who to hand aprons to, to the upcoming meeting.

KG0PI TRIP TO KH6 Jim and family enjoyed a couple weeks in Hawaii, reporting fine weather, plenty of food on their cruise ship, and lots of neat sights. They were lucky enough to get an upgrade and were moved out of steerage to a cabin with a porthole. They got a good look at a number of the islands but Jim didn't manage to generate any RF.

W1AW STUFF Those of you who listen to W1AW may have noticed an improved signal recently. New station manager Joe NJ1Q has moved over from the Outgoing QSL Bureau. Joe's been busy strengthening yagis, redoing teh ground system, getting better circulation to the bulletin transmitters, etc. They've also altered the anrtenna configuration for bulletin transmissions in hopes of covering the t coast and Europe better. While at Hq., BJ hand delivered our Field Day log submission to the ARRL's contest desk.

NEW HAM Larry Jumper, Colby's landfill manager, joins the already healthy list of city employees with ham tickets. KCØBNV is the callsign and Larry's using an old Kenwood HT from KØFJ. Those of you who attended Field Day know that Larry (who was still waiting for his call at the time) is already a gung-ho operator.

BANDSCAN BT Jim KGØPI scored 2nd in Kansas in the January RTTY Roundup, behind perennial KC contester AKØA. Jim also got a certificate for 3rd place, low power in the Zero district. Congratulations! BT One of the board actions that your editor couldn't vote on, but supported, was the addition of non-cw digital modes as a separate mode in Field Day. Baudot RTTY will be the mode of choice here, and that should put KGØPI in big demand during FD for our efforts. The 100 point packet bonus will go away. BT KØBJ figures he's King of the Road - well, DX king anyway. The last time Bruce was mobile on HF was in 1972 with a Heathkit SB101 and Hustler whip. He got a 3-pad mag mount and put his Spider antenna on with his TS50 on a recent trip to St. Louis, his first HF mobile in 25 years. It's amazing how much safer HF mobile is when you don't have to "dip the plate and peak the grid". BJ thought it looked great on their Camry -- Janice had a different opinion!. BT Jim KGØPI and family enjoyed their trip to KH6 land -- Hawaii. They saw many of the islands in the chain, and did a good job of keeping themselves fed on the cruise ship too. BT Doc WØLOW is having an auction in Colby to sell his unneeded items, now that he's moved out to daughter Becky WØVGE's country QTH. BT KØBJ and family recently enjoyed a visit from freshly retired ex QST editor Al W1AB. Al, his XYL Maggie and Scottie dog Angus are spending 3 months on the road. Al is QRV with a TS50 and Hustler whip on their small camper car, but don't look for him on ssb. He spends most of his time on 7037 with a paddle mag-mounted to his left armrest. Luckily, Al's left-handed and gets along FB sending cw on the move!

NEXT MEETING MAY 8 CCC NORTON ROOM This is the SE classroom in Thomas Hall. The big topics are 440 repeater, bylaws revision, and fall activities - creamcan dinner, foxhunt, ??? We voted to become a 'normal' affiliated club, not a school club, which necessitates a bylaws update.
