CHRISTMAS PARTY DECEMBER 14 Our annual holiday dinner will again be held at the Sirloin Stockade in Colby, with
eyeball QSOs at 6:00 CST and Dutch treat food pileup at 6:30. In lieu of tipping, the club is collecting a $1/chair "room tax" to give the
waiters this year. To enjoy the camradene of the evening a little longer, we're planning a "white elephant" gift exchange and some other
activities. Everyone is encouraged to bring a white elephant for either the ham or non-ham pools. As in the past family members are
encouraged to attend. An RSVP to Kathy NOXNJ is appreciated, but not necessary. More details on social agenda next month.
DUES REMINDER Club dues are soon due for 1996. You can pay with the enclosed SAE, at meetings. at the Christmas party
or by mail to Kathy NOXNJ, 1872 County Road 15. Colby KS 67701. Dues are $10, and $5 for other family members. A list of
renewed members will appear in the January newsletter as a final reminder.
SCANNER RAFFLE The club has voted to raffle a 20 channel handheld Realistic scanner, and 10 tickets are included in this mailing.
Please pay and turn in stubs for those you sell. More will be available at the November meeting for resale. Unlike past Field Day raffles,
this one will be drawn at the Christmas meeting, and tickets are $1 each with no quantity discount. While the $2/$5 for 3 pricing sold well
with the 'Country Club' set, it is hoped the dollar tickets will encourage alot more participation from the general public. The club treasury is
at a low point in the past couple years due to a number of prudent expenses-- please do all you can to make this a successful protect!
FIELD DAY RESULTS Without "hired guns" around this year a major thrust was to score high in the "fun" rankings
at Field Day, but the bottom line results, as reported in November OST, are nothing to sneeze at anyway[ In the most
competitive 2A category, we scored in the top 21% at 125th of 607 club entries. Our 969 QSOs and 3866 points was
bested by the Santa Fe Trail ARC (KC area) with 987 Qs. Their 4046 points put them in 113th place in 2A Other Kansas
2A results were Salina 3336, Johnson Co 3226, Great Bend 2760, Topeka 2512, Garden City 2104, Phillipsburg 1698,
Marysville 1576, Hays 1436, Hutch 1434, Hoyt 1124, and Basehor 880. The Jayhawk AIRS of KC, who have openly
challenged us the past couple years, finally got the best of us with 1236 Qs and 4812 points BUT they were in 3A so a
direct comparison isn't really fair. Nonetheless their 29 participants had a great showing. BTW their effort included 2 HF
yogis' BUT overall high KS score came from Lawrence, where the Douglas CO ARC scored 5230 points from 493 Qs in
the 1 A battery category thanks to their big QRP(5 watt)bonus. Great job WOGI crew (10 ops)t Other KS 1A
(nonbatter y)scores were Heart of America (KC) 1734, Douglas Co 2nd team N6YR 1500, Valley Center 1086,
Independence 500, and Mine Creek 386. No Kansas clubs submitted higher than 3A. So the Trojans ranked 2nd to 4th in
the Kansas derby, depending on how you categorize, but we (and everybody) scored big in entertainment and
experience.
i 8 KBOLGX TAKE HONORS AT 1ST TROJAN GOLF TOURNEY Great weather made it a (unfilled aftemoon October 15
for the scramble golf tournament al Bourquin's. Fleck and Gerry paired up, while KOBJ teamed with novice golfer KFOMJ. KBOMBS and
novice Candace Albers paired in the teen block. The scramble or "best ball" format gives the novices the chance to hang in there, and in
fact ALL participants came up with a few fantastic shots. (we won't talkaeovt the duffs) The par 3 course only gave up one birdie to the Trojans,
when KOBJ chipped his tee shot on #4 to within 4 feet of the pin, and while he doffed his putt KFOMJ managed to sink it. Mike and Bruce
led the pack through the first 12 holes, but Fleck and Gerry chipped away furiously on the back 9 and finally took the lead for keeps on
the 17th hole. Jon and Candace finished with a respectable showing in the unhandicapped loumament. The golfing was nice, but the

1996 CLUB OFFICERS SLATE A ballot is enclosed for 1996 officers, IF you area dues-paying or honorary member. You can
return the ballot AND your check for 1996 dues (hint hint) in the enclosed SAE, if you aren't sure you'll be at the November meeting. If you
notice some repetition in the nominations, keep in mind what can happen if you miss a meeting AND make requests about "not being
nominated"!
CROSSWORD ERRATA Some gremlins crept into the October Crossword puzzle, so before disgustedly checking out the
answers you couldn't get, make the corrections & give it another try! DOWN - 35: Abbreviation for 55 ACROSS; ACROSS- 43: BASIC
disk output command; 72: (put a slantbar / in the 3rd square of 72 ACROSS); 75a: DC input voltage (2 words) (label the first square

BANDSCAN BT Gerry KBOLGX and Mike KFOMJ conducted some "city business" at Trenton October 11, taking a well-earned day off
to chase fish. Wonder if Mike is as good at catching huge pike as Cody B is? BT Jim KGOR has adopted the K0BigJoke philosophy of
packet-- put that old Apple 2 to use as a terminal. In Jim's case it's a 2C, and it took a fancy 8 pin DIN to RS232 cable to feed his tnc. He
and Bruce are both using the Apple Packet Radio shareware program, written by an Italian ham. BT Tom NOXN0 spent a couple off
days in the corn fields driving the grain cart that KOBJ had been in a few days earlier while wet corn was being sent to Loch. Al the time
Bruce was at the bins in Helfand so he and Tom didn't eyeball during the two days, but they did have a "OSO" (complete with callsignsl)
on the 800 Mhz trucking system used by Bruce and family's farming operation. BT Bruce KOBJ has been off packet for a couple weeks
while his Apple dual floppy drive underwent much-needed realignment and cleaning. Intel •oIleI"e I BT Trojan Don KHPVI, curator of the
Bighorn Museum of Amateur Radio in Genoa CO reports working a ham in Des Moines one early morning in early September through
our machine! He also brings up Woodland Park so can't consistently use our repeater. The club station at the museum, WOW0, is on
160M to 70cm! What a great location for VHF and HF propagation -- Genoa is the highest point in the USA east of the Rockies! They
also have links on 145.655 simplex and 447.650- repeater, to Squaw Mountain's 448.125 machine. That machine can also be accessed
on 53.00 simplex! Don says they are occasionally on packet on 145.07, but he's using MSYS ver. 1.19 which is "a nightmare" and he's
"thinking of changing to FBB". Dan, the word from packeteers around here would probably be GO FOR F6FBB1 BT Jim Ii is chairman of
the hamfest committee, and held a first meeting at his home October 26. The next scheduled meeting is December 6 If you're asked to
help with something, please do so if at all possible --shared work makes for easy work and a fun time for all BT KBOLGX's brother Doug
had been contemplating a move to Colby, but it looks now like he'll be in Salina for a while. Many of you know Doug is a 'garage door
computer dealer, and he's bought tables at our swapfests. BT The large claimed Field Day score of the Garden City club (3914) turned
out to be due to them thinking the 10 point bonus for each ARRL member was instead 100 points/member. They report their 2104
showing is still the best in club history. Congrats Sandhills ARC. BT Our March 9 swapfest will not be the "season-opener". Kearney is
holding one February 17. BT KFOMJ is sporting a new mouche these days. Gives him that slick "city administrator" look, but if he
suddenly sounds like he's running a speech processor on 2M, maybe it's time for a tnm!
IF OPERATING SYSTEMS WERE AIRLINES: DOS Air -All passengers go out onto the runway, grab hold of the plane, push it until it
gets in the air, hop on, jump off when it hits the ground again. Then they grab the plane again, push it back into the air, hop on, etc.
MAC Airways - The cashiers, flight attendants and plots all look the same, feel the same and act the same. When asked questions
about the flight, they reply that you don't want to know, don't need to know, and would you please return to your seat and watch the
movie. Windows Airlines - The terminal is neat and clean, the attendants all attractive, the pilots capable. The fleet of Learjets the carrier
operates is immense. Yourjet takes off without a hitch. pushing above the clouds, and at 20000 feet it explodes without waming. Fly
Windows NTAll the passengers carry their seats out onto the tarmac, placing the chairs in an outline of a plane. They all sit down, flap
their arms and make let swooshing sounds as if they are flying. Unix Express-All passengers bring a piece of the airplane and a box of
tools with them to the airport. They gather on the tarmac, arguing constantly about what kind of plane they want to build and how to put it
together. Eventually the passengers split into groups and build several different aircraft, but give them all the same name Some
