AUGUST 2000

UPCOMING EVENTS Once again in August K0FJ will be providing our program. This one will demo the radio system the city has been using for meter billing for a while now. Although not ham radio, this has some amateur implications and is fascinating technology. Our next ‘full’ meeting will be September and we may hold the creamcan dinner the same day, or on a nearby weekend. We need to do some serious work to the tower trailer; its base got bent up pretty badly at FD and there are at least a couple ways to go about repairing it. As the wx cools down but before fall harvest starts, we should get some of these events and projects in the logbook.

SALINA HAMFEST AUGUST 27 The Kansas State ARRL convention coming up the last Sunday of August should have plenty of interest. K0FJ, KB0MBT and K0BJ are among those planning to attend. This bunch is thinking about purchasing a swap table, and would have room for other person’s items if anybody has boat anchors that should be peddled. This will be discussed at the August program/meeting.

NWS SPECIAL EVENT IN DECEMBER Scott KB0WPY is once again spearheading a special event weekend activating various NWS offices around the country. This year they’ll be on the first weekend of December. This will overlap the ARRL 160 meter contest but that won’t affect many participants, and those that it does can do the NWS event during daylight hours. The on-air event last year garnered more interest than expected. Scott is appreciative of the support from ARRL’s Field and Educational Services branch and they and the various NWS offices are giving Scott high marks for thinking of and organizing the event. A few dozen NWS offices were active on HF for last year’s event which was on the weekend of CQWW DX CW contest.

PACKET RACKET de Mike K0FJ – A few Trojans really enjoyed the packet/APRS demo at Mike’s house for the last program. The flexibility of the APRS system is rather staggering. K0BJ has his TMD700A mounted in the Explorer and may have a GPS hooked to it soon for transmitting mobile APRS data.

BANDSCAN Jim KG0PI followed plans in May's QST of a paddle made from copper clad board and soldered one up. It may actually be a little clumsy to use but certainly is small enough for portable use. Jim is in the process of constructing a "total" qrp station. He has an 80/40 dc rx kit ordered from the New Jersey QRP Club. BT Bruce K0BJ is the proud owner of Darel WA0GBN’s old Yaesu FT820 6M rig. Darel upgraded to an IC706 with his General ticket, and Bruce now has a Ten Tec 20/6 transverter he’ll be peddling. BT Congratulations to Scott KB0WPY who racked up 248 QSOs in the 10 meter contest last December. Results of the contest are now on the ARRL website and will be in September QST. BT Bruce K0BJ moved up the Explorer when XYL Janice upgraded to a Subaru Outback. BJ’s first move was to mount his TMD700A 2m/70cm packet/voice radio, to keep the TS50 company. BT Jake KB0ZIA had an expensive night at the county fair. No, he didn’t get carried away at the duck shooting booth. His nice VX5R H-T slipped out of his grasp and even though he noticed it missing in a short distance from his car, he didn’t find it. The plot thickens – a few days later some odd traffic started showing up on the Police freqs, and eventually officer Sitton recovered Jake’s rig, which was modified for wide xmit. BT Bruce K0BJ has been enjoying 20M QSOs with Jim AA4VQ, ex-WA0TUS. Jim lives in SC but used to be from Rexford. He has a new IC718 and is active on the air for the first time in a few years, and first time in decades with anything more than flea power. BT Jake maybe didn’t have the best time at the fair, but other Trojans fared better. KB0LGX K0BJ and KB0MBT were in the audience the night of the antique tractor pull. More raw power burning up than a misloaded SB-220 in the middle of Sweepstakes….? BT K0BJ was intrigued enough by the QST review of the German watch that synchronizes to WWVB (60 kHz) automatically, that he bought one on the web. It’s not a really well-made watch but is kinda fascinating, and as close as we are to WWV in Boulder, the watch can easily get a time fix most any time of day.

NEXT MEETING AUGUST 10 K0FJ office Colby City Hall 7PM CDT
Mike is demoing the telemetry system that does utility billings for the city. It’s a nifty spread spectrum/packet scheme.
