AUGUST 2001
Nine Run Run Saturday
Our biggest annual public service event is coming right up. The 10K run will start at Fike Park Satourday morning at 8:30. Trojans helping out should meet on the air by 8AM and plan deployment to checkpoints. Right now we think we have KC0JAO N0XJ K0BJ KC0HBR K0MXU K0QP. We could use a couple more if available.KANSAS SECTION ARRL HAMFEST AUGUST 19
The Salina hamfest is again designated as the state convention. K0BJ will be at the ARRL booth and K0FJ has an adjoining swap table. One highlight for us will be at the ARRL meeting where two eastern Kansas clubs will be presented certificates for 50 years as ARRL-affiliated clubs and the Trojans pull down our 25 year-affiliation certificate! WG0Q and N0ORS of Barton County will discuss ham ops for the Hoisington tornado. At least a couple Trojans are going down Saturday and will be attending an Applebee's get-together. There should be chances for hitching a ride to this one.NWS SPECIAL EVENT
ARRL bulletins and the website have just put out word on the NWS Special Event, which will now be known as NWS/ARRL Skywarn Recognition Day, Dec 1 GMT. We've been invited to help out again with the N0A flagship event station. KC0FEH would like to hold the Sept and November meetings in Goodland at the NWS. The Colby crew and K0MXUcould car pool from here. Sept would be a great time to check out antenna locations for the Dec NWS Event, and November would let us take care of final arrangements. Web info at http://hamradio.noaa.gov/SCOTT CITY SWAPFEST/PICNIC
Similar to last year, the SHARC gang has scheduled a Sept. 16 potluck picnic and swapfest. We had a carload attend last year and sounds as though we'll have at least that many going down for this one. Stay in touch on 2M if interested in sharing a ride. The 4-H hall has been remodeled so the venue is a bit more posh (attn XJ and BJ -- cloth napkins MAY be required…..)
K0KHP with new silver cruiser
As one of the newbie patrolmen, David K0KHP was glad to settle on a rough 8K mile car that had been used as an "elude practice" vehicle at KHP academy in Salina. Dave asked for and pulled duty at opening day as Kansas Speedway, and stopped by the academy on the way home to collect his chariot. Well…… the Smoky gods were smiling on 'KHP -- he got a brand new 2001 silver Crown Victoria to patrol Sherman County in. Your state tax dollars at work…….BANDSCAN
Lee Fleckenstein, XYL of K0RXT (SK) says she nearly made it out to Field Day to say hello. BJ emphasized she's welcome anytime. BT Jeff KC0JAO's tower project moved along faster than anticipated, with acquisition of a ATB-34 Cushcraft yagi from KI0NN in Great Bend. K0s FJ & BJ joined Jeff for an impromptu antenna and tower raising one recent Sunday. Jeff has been bagging DX at a very accelerated rate compared to the wire days. BT Doc W0LOW recently had a number of grandkids visiting, including some hams. Brian AA6FV of Murrieta CA visited his aunt Becky W0VGE and Doc, as well as a number of relatives here for the event. BT K0FJ and K0BJ had big plans to multiop the IARU contest July 14. A software conflict between WriteLog and Windows 2000 with LPT-driven cw deep-sixed their multiop plan, so both guys put in modest but enjoyable single-op performances. Gary W0TM had a sparkling 2K QSOs from his Vail retreat. BT Congratulations to the SHARC gang to our south. The folks got good coverage of their hobby and public service activities on KSN's Main Street Kansas show July 31. There were some especially good shots and interviews with AC0E and W0YQX. The SHARCs under ex-Trojan N0KQX are mulling a possible class-session of the new ARRL Emergency Comms Level I course. BT The KSU solar car CATalyst turned in a great 5th place out of 30 in this year's SunRayce, which ran Route 66 from Chicago to LA. The KSU team is all-ham and they use packet to send telemetry and voice for strategy etc. BT K0FJ was back in the 'continuing education frying pan' as one of the first enrollees and graduates in ARRL's Level II Emergency Management course. Congrats Mike. Antenna Modeling is likely to be one of the next offerings in ARRL's Continuing Education program. BT K0FJ, N0XJ & N0XNK did the repairs and painting on the packet APRS Digi site at Jerry Barton WB0YCZ's on Thurs July 19th. Tnx guys. BT Some work is beong done between N0QE KC0FEH and K0FJ regarding a "Meteorology 101" course that would delve into mechanics of severe thunderstorms and especially tornadoes, beyond the spring refreshers and more specific than the more generalized advanced spotting classes sometimes offered. January and Feb 2002 are dates being looked at. Any interest? BT Mr CW Juice, Moe W0SZF of McCook, continues to recover well from his operations and is hitting the road in the next few months to enjoy Texas while we go into cooler wx. BT Jake KB0ZIA has moved from Sunflower apts. To 220 N. Chick. Jake's move included understanding with the landlord that some 'hardware' would be sprouting. He came back from FD with Yaesu's nice all-mode VHF/UHF FT-726 rig courtesy of N0TM. BT
