MEETINGS 2ND THURSDAYS 7:30PM CDT

AUGUST 1993

HAM LUNCH VENUE CHANGE ON MEETING DAYS In an effort to expand our

culinary horizons, we're going to try having Ham Lunch on 2nd

Thursdays (meeting nights) somewhere other than the B-Hive, We'll

still convene at noon CT. The restaurant of the month will be listed

in this newsletter. We'll meet August 12 at the new Subway sandwich

shop north of Arbys. Other Thursdays will still be at the B-Hive.

Swap TABLE This could be a regular feature of the newsletter. Many clubs run free non-commercial want-ads, and while our reader base isn't huge, we'll see if there's interest. Send YOUR ad to K0BJ

FOXHUNT SEPTEMBER 12 Our second foxhunt of the season will be held

September 12, NOQGB has agreed to be the fox, unless a veteran

agrees to be the fox; then he'll participate in the chase. Final

format and announcements will be made at the September meeting.

ARES PHOTO IDs Ken Messamore has loaned a special Polaroid camera

with which we can take KHP-type photos for ARES IDs. In addition,

Ken will be giving ARES members an E.P. ID, recognized statewide.

We'll be taking the photos at the August meeting so wear a suitable

shirt top. If you haven't yet signed up for ARES, we've included a

sheet with this mailing. If interested complete and return to KF0MJ.

JUNQUE DONATED BY KSNK, Thanks to Fred WD0EBJ speaking up, the club

was given 7 u-matic VTRs, 2 vector oscilloscopes and some other

outdated video gear. MJ TES and BJ picked the stuff up at the

Oberlin studio-transmitter and got a tour of the facility to boot.

The stuff could be parted out for connectors, fans, power supplies

etc., or we could sell the lot or bits to anyone who is interested.

Public TV KOOD has expressed interest in the u-Matics. Thanks KSNK!

TARC GOLF TOURNEY? K0RXT KB0JRW and K0BJ are toying with the idea

of a golf tournament at the Colby Country Club sometime before

winter. This would definitely be a kibbitz-in-the-fresh-air

operation, rather than a seriously competitive affair. In other

words, Butch is as likely as anyone to rack up the winning score. A

good chance for golf novices to try it. Any others interested?.

SWAPFEST COMMITTEE FORMED At the July meeting we decided there's enough potential to continue research on a possible swapfest. Although the idea was originally to fill the void left by Kearney, we've been looking not only at March, but summertime dates too, NOQGB is the chief planner, but got all July attendees to agree to help him with projections and plans. To save costs we're looking at other than the community building - particularly the national Guard in Colby which would provide excellent table access with large items. Ability to attract a worthwhile crowd and not spend a fortune an publicity remains a chief concern, but it's hoped we can resolve the problems which have been identified to_date.

K0BJ VICE DIRECTOR CANDIDATE After W0FIR's death, Bruce became

interested in seeking the Vice Director post for Midwest Division -

KS IA NE M0. His nominating petition has circulated and his hat is

in the ring. The job could include 2 trips/year to ARRL Hq.

BANDSCAN We bested some of the other area Field Day groups - ACOE

ran 2A from Scott City with Dale N0KQX on the team, and racked up

360 QSOs. Their generator lasted 24 minutes, necessitating a trip to

Garden City for a backup. N0TVS joined the Ness City club as WA0UL X,

4A. They too made 360 Qs, and were rained out from 10:30 to 6:00

(sounds like an Excuse for finding a soft bed). They operated only

4S020 on the HF bands, but had 2m SSB/FM/pkt, and 6m ssb, c=pith o

hams there for the full FD and 6 other drop-ins. Our 638 Qs and

near-complete bonus lineup topped their scores, but both groups

claim very high marks in the fun category. BT Jim KB0JRW is the

owner of a new IC751A HF rig from AES, with external power supply.

It had to be returned to ICOM for some warranty service, but the

Upside is the break gave Jim time to complete work on his QST

homebrew 20m QRP cw rig project. It's built using "ugly

construction" - ground wires soldered to a copper board while point

to-point wiring is done direct from component legs. But ugly it

ain't - great-looking project Jim! BT The PO wants newsletter-type

mail to go without staples, so I've been trying the label-stick

routine. Is it working ok? BT XNK XNO and MJ have a little job

perk;. The programmable Motorola HTs they are issued by the city have

extra channels and they can monitor 146.82 while on-duty. ALL in the

name of public service, of course. BT Seems as though the new

equipment cropping up among club members is coming at a high price.

KBOJRW's IC751 apparently involved the ancillary purchase of a

Toyota Camry 'bribe price' for Carol, and the Yaesu HT that NOXN0

got might cost him a new house. MY, what an expensive hobby' BT

NOXNL has been having trouble charging his IC2 batteries. Hopefully

Greg will get it squared away soon and be active on the repeater. BT

KB0LGX is working on installing a touchtone pad from NOTES i n his

Standard HT, so he'll have autopatch access. BT Jeff Morrison ex

KA0HMY has moved back to Colby to practice optometry with his dad

K0CVY We need to make sure his practice includes some code and

theory as well, and that he gets a fresh ham ticket. Maybe he'll get

the old man carrying an HT on his side again too, like in the old

WROAGS days. BT NOXNO has homebrewed a 2m vertical dipole from an

old tv antenna, to punch out his YaesU HT's base station signal a

little more. BT The power steering in the Mobil Command Post went

QRT on the way to Field Day, and KF0MJ got tennis elbow getting it

snuggled into Phillips Park. Under the wrench of KB0LGX and the

other city mechanics, the hose is now repaired and it's ready to go.

BT The first day of July nine hams spotted wx from Brewster,

Dresden, Rexford, Colby and MJ's roving green monster. Tornadoes

came down in Sherman and Decatur counties. Heavy wx at harvest time

sent hams spotting on numerous nights. BT There are mumblings among

the Field Day crowd that MAYBE we should attempt to homebrew a

replacement top section for the club's trailer/tower. Anyone game to

have a workday on this, maybe in the winter? BT The Field Day

rehash at the July meeting included lots of thoughts on new sites -

the Colby airport, Scott Lake, Monument Rocks, I-70 rest stop/FCC rig disposal grounds (if you don't know - don't ask!), Mt. Sunflower,

etc. We'll look at alot of suggestions before deciding next spring.

NEXT MEETING AUGUST 12 **1015 Maize Rd. 2blk E & 2 N of CCC** ARES photo taking. The program will be another NCDXF video.
