CHRISTMAS PARTY DECEMBER 14 Our annual holiday dinner is at the Sirloin Stockade in Colby, with eyeball QSOs at 6:00
CST and Dutch treat food pileup at 6:30. In lieu of tipping, the club is collecting a $1/chair "room tax" to give the waiters this year. To
enjoy the camraderie of the evening a little longer, we're planning a "white elephant" gift exchange and some other activities, including
door prizes. Everyone is invited to bring a white elephant for either the ham or non-ham pools, but don't let lack of a white elephant keep
you away A5 in the past family members are encouraged to attend. An RSVP to Kathy NOXNJ is appreciated, but not necessary.
DUES REMINDER Club dues are due for 1996. You can pay at the Christmas party or by mail to Kathy NOXNJ, 1872 County
Road 15, Colby KS 67701. Dues are $10, and $5 for r"r family members. Renewed members to date are
SCANNER RAFFLE Our 20 channel handheld Realistic scanner raffle ticket sales seem to be going well. A big THANKS to those
who have been hawking and buying them. See KFOMJ NOXNJ or KOBJ if you need more tickets, and be sure stubs are turned in by
Christmas Party night for the drawing.
WINDFALL FOR NWS AND CLUB Dennis KBONYC bought a MFJ 1270C 9600baud-capable tnc with NWS funds, for future
use at NWS. He was surprised to receive a second tnc a while later, and when he advised MFJ of the stray shipment, they decided to
DONATE it to the cause! The plan is to save the second tnc for the CLBY node, and when 9600 baud radios are available we can
speed up linking operations considerably.
1996 CLUB OFFICERS A crude attempt was made by an unknown party to "stuff'the box with numerous illicit ballots marked for
KBOLGX and NOXNK for all positions except Program Director, which was marked for KFOMJ. The only lead in the case to date is the
observation that Gerry, Gary and Mike were the persons who nominated KBOMBT for the various club officer positions. t Our new
officers are Gerry Bieker KBO~President; Gary Shull NOXNK Vice President; Kathy Lindberg NOXNJ Sec/Treas; Bruce Frahm KOBJ
Program Director; and Doc Fleckenstein KORXT, Cmdr. of TARO Coast Guard, Villa Hi Division.
NEW LANDLINE BBS The Thomas County Free-Net is now up and running at CCC, with the phone number 4622358. First time
checkins answer some questions, then have read access to files but no upload/download privileges. After review by sysops, they are
automatically given second level access, which is upload/download privileges to the Free-Net files. One nifty freeware item on the files is
a slick GUI/windowed interface to the Free-Net. 3rd level privileges come with $25/month dues which gives 300 hours/month of Internet
access, as well as toll-free lines to national on-line services. This is not available yet but is expected by mid-December. The local
Free-Net is affiliated with National Telecommunications Information Net, which has numerous school, government, rural etc. files from
around the nation. Just a reminder that the Colby Connection, NOXNK's long-time Ilbbs, is accessible at 462-2555. Gary has just
switched to new bbs software, arid a number of new checkins are frequenting his board in recent days.
FIELD TRIPS One item we need to cover at the party is planning for the annual New Yearns Day Open House at "The Hill", the
WBODRL VHF contest superstation. Starting time, and arranging for van(s), need to be planned. If you would like to go but will NOT be
at the Christmas party, please let an attending club member know. Bruce KOBJ can get a room at Dayton's Marriott for the May 17-19
Hamvention (note new date) if we want to send a carload this year; we need to firm the room by the end of January. Both of these
events are worth the time and miles, especially if you have never seen them in the past.
EQUIPMENT SALE AT CCC Fleck, our mole at the college, has announced there will be a big sale of used computers and A-V
equipment coming up before Christmas. The equipment can be viewed in the A-V and computer rooms at Thomas Hall. College
employees will get first crack at the stuff, and Fleck is willing to buy any items early for interested members. Rumor has it there should be
some bargains. We'll have more details on this at the Christmas party.
CLUB MNS POINTS FOR SPREADING CHRISTMAS SPIRIT The club has generated some goodwill and newspaper
PR by loaning the tower/trailer to the City of Colby, During the holidays, the tower has been placed atop the swimming pool bathhouse
and is topped with a star, with trailing streams of "chaser" lights beaming down from the star. Its high location is dramatic, and it was
probably dramatic when the tower was raised to the top of the bathhouse with a digger truck. Congratulations to the hams who work
for the city, in getting this project done.
BANDSCAN BT Mike KFOMJ has refurbished the old C-Band TVRO dish that used to belong to KOBJ and KBOMBS. Some
mechanical work on the dish and a software update to the receiver have it 'up to speed' again. BT Jim KGOPI had at least one visit from
Murphy this summer. On a family trip to Oklahoma, Jim took along the brand new spare battery pack he'd bought for his Alinco HT, and
hasn't seen it since. Jim, some of us can do that without even leaving home! BT "QRZed, this is TIGER -- er, KORXT". Fleck has a new
job, in the A-V room at CCC. Surely the campus is not the same with the Doctor of Decadence putting in time out there! Back in his
original college days, Fleck's campus nickname was Tiger. His neighbors report that since he took the job a few weeks ago his step has
been quicker, but that also might explain his absence from the repeater and packet screens. Fleck -- since you're on the staff out there,
how about getting a staff ham shack installed on campus? 8T Fred WDOEBJ enjoys using his AEA-MBX digital demodulator. He's able
to read, and hard print, the RTTY and packet modes with the setup. BT KBOMBS and KOBJ have the parts for the BayCom-type packet
tnc project featured in December QST, and plan to use it with Jon's 486 laptop computer and a HT. They hope to have it ready to use
when they go down to ZF land - the Cayman islands - in late January. The guys also have a new job description -- audio engineers for
the Colby Methodist church's services/radio program. They are now on the list of volunteers to run the mixing boards for Sunday
services. Jim KQCVY set up the system. BT WDOAIS is a call some hams may remember, belonging to Loren Marter, the former pastor
at Aby's Methodist church. Loren left for Wichita years ago, but is now back in Quinter. Jim KGOPI visited with him at a recent church
confab. Loren would like to get a little involvement with the Trojans, and we hope to make him a "convert'. BT KFQMJ and KOBJ played
around in the Sweepstakes contest this year. With quiet geomagnetic conditions, Bruce put in an effort to get the coffee mug for a "Clean
Sweep" of all 77 sections. The last one, Virgin Islands, came surprisingly early at 7:30am Sunday morning of the contest. Both guys had
a good time although great wx and honey-dos limited their operating time. BT Jim Morrison KOCVY is doing well after his heart surgery.
With more hardware in his chest, some of Jim's 'friends' are speculating he'd be "glued to the rig" from magnetic fields, IF he ever gets
around to transmitting. BT It's not exactly competition, but th,f Amarillo club is having a swapfest and weather spotter's forum Feb. 3. This
is a new event for them, and it will be interIting to see how well it does. Amarillo is quite a bit bigger than Colby! BT Tom NQXNO scored
high marks in the integrity column recently, but got the whoopie cushion at home. It all stemmed from his issuing his daughter a parking
ticket for being too far away from the curb. What goes around comes around, and it's rumored that "Dad" gets to foot the bill for the
infraction! NEXT MEETING December 14 *** Sirloin Stockade *** Eyeball QSOs 6pm, eat at 6:30 CST. Don't forget your
"white elephants" for the gift exchange (ham and non-ham pools). We'll keep business to a minimum, but need
to briefly discuss arrangements for the New Year's trip to Salina.
