CHRISTMAS DINNER DECEMBER 9 AT COLONIAL
It’s the regular meeting night but we’ll have dinner at the Colonial Steakhouse at the west I-70 exit in Oakley. We’ll meet starting at 6pm CST and eat at 6:30. The Colonial is not requiring any commitment on numbers so feel free to join us at the last minute if circumstances allow. We’ll have a fun evening with minimal business.2000 OFFICERS / QUARTERLY MEETINGS The November meeting had light attendance, so our elections will be held at the Christmas party. Nominations from the floor will be accepted if anyone wants to make this a horse race. Here’s the slate so far:
Kathy Lindberg N0XNJ for Pres
Jim Robison KG0PI for VP
Mike Albers K0FJ for S/T
Bruce Frahm K0BJ for Prog Dir.
Due to light attendance, Kathy and other officers have proposed we go back to quarterly meetings. We could have work nights or social meetings in off months. We’ll take a preference vote at the meeting.
SWEEPSTAKES PHONE MULTIOP Mike K0FJ hosted a multiop Sideband Sweepstakes entry Nov. 20-21. We used Mike’s TS570 and K0BJ’s SB220 amp for the main station (no low power category for multiop stations in SS) and Mike’s TS830 and the club’s TH3 mounted on our trailer tower for spotting multipliers. Mike and Bruce were around for most all of the 30 hour contest period (although sleeping during their 1-7am offtime). Jim KG0PI was on hand from before the starting gun to Sunday noon. Scott KB0WPY and Matt KB0YFN Mentzer from Goodland worked a healthy stint for 4 hours early Saturday evening. Gerry KB0LGX dropped by twice too. The ops had a great time and logged 1171 QSOs with all 79 multipliers in USA/Canada for a CLEAN SWEEP. VE9 Maritimes was the last section logged, with CO and KS prior to that. Four stations in the four quadrants of Kansas ran multiop stations. AB0S in Junction City won this derby with a sweep and about 1650 QSOs. Our K0FJ group apparently took 2nd place, ekeing out a margin over N0NB in Wichita with 1150 QSOs and a sweep. We don’t have a total for the W0MI Sandhills group in Garden City but late Saturday night they had about half our QSOs.
BJ’s amp has been non-operational on 10 and 15 for years. He and FJ worked it over at Mike’s house (AFTER the contest, naturally) and after some new resistors, a dose of tuner cleaner, and a mechanical repair, the amp is (sorta) as good as new.
DUES ARE DUE It’s that time of year again to renew membership in Trojan ARC. Treasurer K0FJ will be accepting $10 from renewing or new members at the Christmas party. You can also mail dues to Mike’s address on the footer of this newsletter.
GREAT NWS EVENT Big congratulations go to Scott KB0WPY who organized the very popular National Weather Service Special Event activity November 27. With the HF cw bands absorbed with CQ Worldwide, a number of stations were surprised and pleased to have a big event taking place on ssb. About 60 NWS offices hosted hams who used a number of special event or club calls while QSOing hams and exchanging brief wx reports. The event brought attention to the cooperation between NWS and amateur radio wx spotters, as well as being just fun! NWS Goodland operated as N0A and logged hundreds of QSOs. They will probably have a "blizzard" of certificate requests from the masses who were actively chasing NWS QSOs.
GREAT FIELD DAY RESULT While we had the usual great time at Field Day and broke the 1000 QSO mark, popular opinion had us finishing less than prominently in the official results. Reports of many teams cleaning house on 6 meters sounded intimidating. Well, we finished 2nd in KS in the most-popular 2A category. More remarkably we finished just 22 points shy of being 2nd high in KS REGARDLESS of category. Nationally we were in the top ¼ -- 133rd in 2A out of 585 entries. Heart of America ARC who took top KS honors had hired guns K0WA and AB0S on their team, and that entry made healthy use of 6 meters. One thing’s for sure – the increased sunposts made this a more exciting Field Day for all teams.

Although their QSO total wasn’t sky high they must have had a lot of QRP and/or cw QSOs!
BANDSCAN K0BJ enjoyed working cw Sweepstakes multiop with KS contest hotshots K0WA AB0S and W0CEM at CEM’s in Junction City. They missed Virgin Is for a sweep and scored <1200QSOs, probably due largely to Bruce’s weighing them down. However all had a blast and is reminded Bruce and Lee K0WA of their first multiop SS experience 25 years earlier a few miles downriver at W0QQQ – KSU. BT Mike K0FJ is enjoying using K0BJ’s old SB220 amp now that it’s been mended. Bruce was impressed with the Alpha 91B amp at W0CEM’s but with its price tag he doesn’t seem to be rushing to grab one up…. BT The guys who operated at K0FJ’s Sweepstakes station will be getting trophies for their clean sweep – red coffee mugs from ARRL. BT In the recent ARRL Midwest Director election Wade W0EJ from Collins in Cedar Rapids won a comfortable victory over WR0R of KC. K0BJ is looking forward to introducing Wade to the other board members when they next meet in Memphis in January. BT K0BJ got his chicken-wire counterpoises for his 160 Meter inverted L installed and is anticipating some fun in the ARRL 160 Meter contest.
