SWAPFEST MARCH 9 Planning continues on the swapfest under the direction of Jim KGOPI, with all critical details being

covered. Note that the next swapfest committee meeting will be right after the club meeting.

REGIONAL HAM CLUB? One topic of the January meeting was discussion of the idea of an "umbrella club" proposed to cover

the Trojan and Sunflower clubs of NWKS, the Bighorn Club and museum out of Genoa, and another eastern CO club. Not too many

details were available at presstime, but one idea was to have quarterly meetings of a board of directors. The group might be active in

NWS coordination efforts, packet and repeater linking, contesting activities, etc. We should have more info on this as it's discussed

further.

UPCOMING HAMFESTS In addition to our swapfest March 9, Fairbury NE is having a swpafest Sunday March 3. Theirs is

somewhat unique in that admission and tables are both free! One to think about, although it's even farther away, is the Hamboree in

South Sioux City NE May 31-June 1. This year it is also the combined Midwest/Dakota Divisions ARRL convention. It's in a beautiful

location on the Mo. Rlver, and this one will feature DXCC administrator Bill Kennamer K5FUV and Field Services manager Rick Palm K1

CE. If you can leave by midday Thursday, KOBJ and family are traveling up for it and have room for a couple more.

QRX FOR CALENDARS; KEYRING REORDER For those of you who ordered the CQ calendars, the credit card charge went

through January 8, but we're still waiting for delivery. The good news is, they are 16 month calendars! For those who didn't order a

keyring at the Christmas party, we have nearly enough additional demand to place a second order at the $2.50 price. These are 3/4 x 1

3/4" tags of any state license plate design, and up to 10 characters allowed.

BANDSCAN John KAOFBQ recently had anew lens put in one eye. He had been suffering from 'yellow journalism'- he'd forgotten how

WHITE paper can be. He's doing fine, but is now ready for weaker glasses. BT Jim KGOPI now has his KAM Plus on the air. The small

modem allows him to be on 2m packet and HF digi modes a# the same time! He and KOBJ teamed up for a multiop entry in the ARRL

RTTY Roundup in early January, making 420 QSOs in 49 states/provinces and 21 DX countries in 20 hours of operation. Results of the

'test will be in August QST. BT Ex-Trojan Ron Swenson KOSWU, who now lives in Lawrence, was on the repeater recently after a

conference in Goodland. He still does public school eduction support work, similar to his job at the educational coop here but on a state

level. Sidekick Jim Wheeler KAOEZE who was at the coop in that same era, is now working out of the same Lawrence office, but Ron

says they only see each other every few weeks as both are on the road alot. BT The packet IMP project that KOBJ and KBOMBS have

been working on is a high priority now -- seems as though their PK88 is on the fritz. The Frahms just returned from a week in Grand

Cayman. No HF gear was taken, but they got in some sunning and snorkling while the rest of northwest Kansas basked in 5

degree/50mph wx! BT NASA has announced the first 2-man crew for the US/Russian space station which should be ready for habitation

within a couple years. The Russian is Sergei Krikalev, who was active on 2 meter FM and packet from MIR. With luck this'll mean the

new space station will be "radioactive". BT Word from Garden City is that Gary NOKQY may establish a digipeater in Leoti which would

let Goodland and Dodge City NWS offices' packet stations "see" each other. Gary's site has battery backup. He's thinking about setting

up a packet wx station similar to Dale NQKQX's.
