FEBRUARY 1997

SWAPFEST APRIL 19 KGØPI's swapfest committee has set April 19, 1997 from 8AM to 2PM. (setup 6:30) at the National Guard armory in Colby. There will be a $100 gift certificate for HRO and other door prizes. Kansas Packet Group forum by ACØE at 9AM, NWS with KBØNYC and KBØWPYat 10, and ARRL forum with KØBJ at 11. Don KØPV will have lots of gear from an estate. A consignment of ARRL publications will again be on sale. As in the past, great food will be available on-site. Admission remains the same at $2, and $5 for each large table (advance table registration appreciated). The early-bird supper will be held Friday 6:30PM at the Sirloin Stockade. A VE session (walkins welcome) and early setup will be held Friday 8PM at the armory. For more information or table reservations contact Jim Robison KG0PI, 140 N. Garfield, Colby KS 67701; 913-462-6436 or email jrobison@colby.ixks.com. We'll have the command post set up for talk-in and PA duties as well as tours. All club members are asked to donate some time at the club table, food area or command post, as well as help with setup/teardown as their schedules allow.

SCANNER RAFFLE The club is raffling a 50 channel handheld scanner from Gavon's, at $1/ticket. The drawing will be held near the end of the swapfest April 19. Those club members getting hard copies of the Harmonic have 10 tickets included. Please return any tickets sold with payment prior to the drawing. KFØMJ has extra tickets. Please hit up your friends and scanner wonks and help make this raffle another success.

KØUVH SK The last Harmonic mentioned Joe's pneumonia, and he died the day the Harmonic was released. Joe's family name was Friendly, and anyone who knew him would agree he was born into the right family. Joe was buried January 11 in Selden. Allen KØMXU attended the funeral on the bitter cold day. Joe's call was remembered during teh Moment of Silence at the ARRL BoD meeting in Albuquerque the following week.

NØNXJ'S FATHER SK Kathy and Gregg have just returned from Mankato, where Kathy's father died after being in poor health for a month. Our sympathy goes to teh Lindbergs.

SPACE QSO OPPORTUNITIES With the increase in dual-band rigs around here, we should keep in mind the new RR0ØDL repeater aboard the Russian MIR space station. The repeater xmits on 437.950 +/- Doppler, and uplink is 437.750 -/+ Doppler. A CTCSS tone of 141.3 is needed to first key up the repeater. The cosmonauts occasionally get on the local mic with this repeater as well. QSOs have been reported with HTs, and 25 watts to a vertical has worked pretty well. Sensitivity varies with MIR orientation so patience may be required.(tnx Sandhills ARC newsletter)

BANDSCAN BT Jim KGØPI heated up the ionosphere (and the basement?) the first weekend of the New Year. He made 202 QSOs in the RTTY Roundup contest, and snagged 9 DX countries, including 8 new ones for his station! Looks like his FT-5100 dual-band VHF rig may be taking a back seat for a while, especially if the sunspots continue their return.

BT The Sandhills Club in Garden City has been having problems with their 146.91 repeater. They took it off the KIUL tower and did some tests, but apparently the controller is having a mind of its own at times. We hope they'll be able to solve the problems. BT The NWS Goodland office is now getting Colby weather from the airport's Automated Wx Observation System, as relayed to the Internet. Between that and the Hoxie school wx packet connection, the Feds are saving a fair bit in phone charges. Maybe they'll give club members a tax break because of that?!? BT Many of you will remember Gunter DGØOKJ from Germany who visited Colby and Hoxie a year and one half ago. He operated 2m in the area and saw a work night on the command post. Gunter reports cutting his finger on a radial saw; after some work by a fancy surgeon he's back nearly as good as new. BT With plans to refurbish and possibly extend the tower/trailer, KØMXU was reminiscing about its history. Most of us were aware the trailer came from the Wheatbelt RC, but Allen added that it was originally used by Heim TV to entice potential customers to try television> they'd run the trailer out, crank up a tv antenna, guy it and let the family try it for a few days. Once someone forgot to guy the tower, and as those who've been to Field Day can appreciate, that wasn't too good for the tower. It passed to the WBRC at firesale rates and has been in the hands of hams ever since. BT Nobody (to our knowledge) from NWKS made the New Year's Day trip to WBØDRL's VHF superstation this year. Might be worth considering in '98. BT KBØLGX recently attended a concrete/asphalt Certified Inspector course in Salina. BT We discussed the upcoming June Sunrayce at the Jan. meeting. The solar racers will be coming through on US36 again. KSU is working on their first entry in the contest; they're behind where they wanted to be now but hope to make the trials in Arizona in April. NØJCC, the trustee for the KSU ARC WØQQQ, is also the faculty person for the Sunraycers. BT KBØWPY and YFN are haing a great time with an Alinco DX70TH. The rig covers 160-6 meters, and they're running a balanced line fed dipole with it. They're quite active on 80 and 40M cw, have made one Q on 15, and have a number of contacts on 10 SSB as well. They have the kind of XYL/mom to die for; she bought them a MFJ keyboard code converter box. Scott seems to favor the keyboard while Matt likes the straight key. BT The real oldtimers may perk up if they hear the call WØCXX on the air. The Collins ARC in Cedar Rapids recently got the call of Art Collins, founder of Collins Radio as their club call. Back in the 50s and 60s the Collins line of ham gear was top dog, by a healthy measure. BT KGØPI and KØBJ accounted for 3 of the 80000 QSOs made by VKØIR on Heard Island in January, the biggest DXpedition ever (and most expensive at $340K). After days of no propagation Jim heasrd and worked them on 20 SSB, got Bruce rousted to get them, and came back for a RTTY contact. A few days later Bruce logged TN6X in the Congo for a new country. BT The Sandhills ARC of Garden City has just received WØMI for a club call. Wayne was a member of that club. BT LaVon Zielinski has applied for the RN program at CCC. Competition is stiff for the 20 or so slots, but with her Navy experience she should have a good chance. She recently upgraded to Advanced, with a CSCE for 20wpm code too -- FB! BT Phil KB1CK, the Chicken Kicker from Goodland, is moving back to Massachusetts. We'll miss Bill's enthusiasm and "Barney"'s sidekick Mike will miss having him for an instructor.

NEXT MEETING FEBUARY 13 CCC GOVE ROOM Swapfest plans have top billing, with ongoing linking/controller/440 machine issues possible. There may be labels ready to put on flyers. The program is a 20 minute video of last summer's World Radiosport Team Competition, in which 52 2-person teams of worldwide hams competed in San Francisco. KFØMJ and KØBJ participated in the event by QSOing some of the teams. Butch WAØVJR plans to have a prospective ham there
