KEARNEY HAMFEST JANUARY 25 Once again the Midway ARC will have their annual hamfest at the Buffalo Co. Extension office on the east side of town. The doors open at 8:30am, and admission is $2. Talk-in on 146.625 repeater.

SWAPFEST VOTED IN - LOOKING AT APRIL .It was voted at the Christmas meeting to hold the hamfest, but to move it later into March or April. The Sunflower club felt they didn't have the manpower yet to take the swapfest, but might be interested next year. Plans will be a discussion item at our meeting.

KØUVH IN HOSPITAL Joe Friendly, formerly of Selden , has been in the hospital in Hays with pneumonia. Joe's been living in Hays quite a number of years, and although not still active on the bands he's quite a SWLer. His room number at the hospital is 316. The oldtimers remember Joe as net control for the Zone 15A AREC net, while was called Sunday mornings on 3910.

FCC DELAYS RF EXPOSURE Alot of hams and radio clubs have been concerned about the near impossibility of being on time with the RF Exposure tests proposed by the FCC for January 1. ARRL and others had petitioned for postponement, and at the 11th hour FCC granted us a "Christmas present"; delay of the guidelines to January 1, 1998. KA1CV at ARRL Hq. is working on computer models that in most cases should make compliance or non-compliance easy to determine. Stay tuned for more info on this issue, including possible new ham test questions.

AREA HAM RELATIVES SK Opal Unruh, XYL of Sam WØVDF of Colby died recently. The club sent Sam a flower in sympathy. Although never a Trojan, Sam is a retired Motorola technician and was quite active in the Wheatbelt Radio club KØBVX and the Brewster repeater. Sam has a number of exotic DX QSL cards, especially 40 Meter Africans. Also Fleck KØRXT lost a brother-in-law at Christmastime.

CHANGE IN ARRL AFFILIATION STATUS Our affiliation with the American Radio Relay League hadn't been updated for over a year, so we worked on the report form at Ham Lunch recently. We have been a school club, due to our association with CCC classes, and that means we haven't had to meet the 51% ARRL membership rule that "normal" affiliated clubs are held to. As we have somewhat over half of our 32 members as ARRL members, and our ties with the college have been decreasing over the years, we decided to change the affiliation status to Category 1 -- a normal local club. This will possibly mean a little more mail coming in, as school clubs are often considered as "not serious" by hamfest publicity committees and equipment manufacturers.

BANDSCAN BT Jim KGØPI hired J&M Tree Service's bucket truck and rode it himself up to his A-3. He replaced the reflector element end that had come loose and sure enough, the SWR dropped back down to the good range. Jim was surprised that the ride felt 'good' to his somewhat queasy legs. BT Gerry KBØLGX attended an electrician's school sponsored by the city of Colby recently. Does this mean we'll all be able to have incandescent lighting in our Field Day tents this year? BT KBØMBT and NØXNJ were winners of a Jaycees raffle and will be going to Las Vegas! They should enjoy the lights, shows and attractions, and if they're lucky, they won't lose more on the slots than what the trip would have cost outright! BT KFØMJ NØOXP KØBJ and KBØMBS have all been recent "guests" of KØCVY at his optometry office. They're probably all seeing better, and Jim is probably (maybe?) closer to buying a "dream rig" and getting back on the air. Oh yes, Jim will be QSYing to the House floor in Topeka soon. BT KGØPI and KFØMJ/NØOXP have both recently added swank dual-band mobile FM rigs to their cars. Mike got the Kenwood TM V7, which includes a 2 Mhz-wide spectrum monitor display on receive. BT Many OTs who checked into 75M area nets remember Bud WAØKHN who checked in faithfully from Grand Lake CO. He was recently heard on the Kansas Sideband Net, checking in from West Virginia! Bud's been there a few months. BT KØRXT had a little problem locating a box of computer goodies the past couple weeks after getting some help from KFØMJ and others. Fleck was beginning to think he may have been five-fingered by one of his good Samaritan friends, when he suddenly discovered the renegade box in the garage near the rear car door. We all suffer from "Sometimer's Disease" now and then! ** Update - Fleck is STILL having computer woes and is presently off of email on his ixks account. You can reach him at his katie address, which he checks when out at the college. BT KBØMBT and NØXNJ are computer shopping. Although tehy haven't made a final decision, Gregg and Kathy are leaning toward a Cyrix chip-based 586 or 686 machine. BT After a false start and some soul-searching, Mike KFØMJ has applied for a Vanity callsign under Gate 2 of the popular FCC program. Mike filed his request electronically and should be hearing back soon. His call may not change MUCH, as one of his selections is KØFJ and another is NØXP, sorta a double-take on Patti's call. BT KØBJ had a fun QSO on 160M with W1BCG. 75 years and 3 days before the QSO, station BCG was the first North American ham station to be heard in Europe, on about 1.2 Mhz. The special event station used a replica of the original transmitter, and Bruce says he gave them a 578 RST report, due to a "nostalgic" sounding oscillator. BT "Smitty" WØCFY of Great Bend is recuperating at home after being in the hospital. Smitty is a repeater and packet bbs guru in central Kansas.

NEXT MEETING JANUARY 9 CCC GOVE ROOM Swapfest planning, repeater controller report and possible 440 Mhz repeater, and ongoing linking discussions will be business items.
