JULY 2000

FIELD DAY JUNE 24-25 Our new location at Shalz Field and cut dipoles for 2nd station meant much less line noise and co-station interference, and the facilites were ideal for all but kids, who lacked a nice playground like at Phillips Park. One problem with vapor lamps cycling due to flashes from the airport beacon was about our only operating headache. Good conditions on HF and 6M meant lots of QSOs. Hams at our operation included K0s MXU CVY FJ BJ KB0s LGX MBT KC0s CVS HBR LQZ KG0PI WA0CAL WB0VOQ N0s TES OXP XNJ XNK XNO NS0O Nathan Rietcheck

QSOs: CW PHONE

80m: 26 12
40m: 131 67
20m: 126 516
15m: 128 44
10m: 0 466 All 10m contacts made by Novice statation KB0LGX
6m 0 51
Total 411 1156

QSO points: 1986
claimed score (less bonus pts) = 3956

There should be 900 or 1000 bonus points, so we did much better than previous years, due somewhat to the new location and antennas, and somewhat to great conditions Sunday morning on 10M.

NINE RUN RUN Congratulations to Kathy N0XNJ who spearheaded our communications support of the 9 Run Run event held the Saturday morning of Field Day setup. K0MXU N0OXP N0TES WA0CAL Larry Jumper

SEPTEMBER MEETING

Our next ‘full’ meeting will be September and we may hold the creamcan dinner the same day. We need to do some serious work to the tower trailer; its base got bent up pretty badly at FD and there are at least a couple ways to go about repairing it.

THANKS TO GAVONS Scanner books sales have slackened somewhat but 10 more copies were recently taken to Gavons, who touts them for us and gives us all profits. Their support is appreciated. Also Gregg and Kathy keep them available for customers at K-N. This has been a real winner of a project for us over the years.

PACKET RACKET de Mike K0FJ – K0FJ completed the modifications to the CLBY Node to allow
APRS Node in conjunction with regular Packet Node operations. The BTEXT to the node will be changed to include the LAT/LONG info at the site. The CTEXT will remain the same. K0BJ is signed up with the BBS with his new TMD700 Radio. Most of the bulletins to the BBS continue to arrive via email. This works great as it reduces the amount of traffic on the 145.01 network.

Weather Node update - KB0MBT and K0FJ made emergency repairs to the Colby HS Weather Node when the antenna went bad causing the 500 MW MFJ TNC Radio to lose contact with the CLBY Packet Node. We replaced the antenna and installed the Motorola 2 channel radio that was returned from the NWS. This
radio is transmitting 40 watts and has produced 100% reporting in all conditions. The rain gauge is still not working. K0FJ checked for the mods that were suggested by Peet Bros. Our unit had the correct mods already competed on the unit. The NWS is going to contact Peet Bros regarding the problem.

BANDSCAN Thanks to Gerry KB0LGX who got the Mobile Command Post into sickbay for repair of a frozen brake that attacked the Field Day setup crew Friday afternoon. K0FJ and KC0CVS thought they might have to abandon a burning ship for a while…. BT Brad KC0LQZ from Goodland sat in on some of Field Day. Great to have you visit Brad. Also thanks to Shawn KC0CVS for coming from Lawrence to participate with the gang, and bring his MFJ 6M rig so we could have dedicated monitoring of the band. BT Darel WA0GBN has bought N0TM’s FT847 and also is the owner of an IC706 to enjoy his new General privileges. The 706 has 6M so that freed up Darel’s Yaesu 6m rig, which K0BJ has bought for dedicated monitoring of the "Magic band". BT Dale and Nancy N0KQX/OXQ visited from Garden City and had K0FJ do some computer work. BT KG0PI and K0BJ made some QSOs in the IARU contest July 8. Jim is using his KAM to decode the fast cw contest exchanges. Bruce’s contacts were from the Explorer, returning from Manhattan. BT The Field Day crowd enjoyed the presence of Chet NS0O, a faithful cw op and one of the wittiest folks to have around a rig. Thanks for coming up from Tribune Chet. BT Bruce K0BJ pulled down 1st place KS in December’s 160 Meter contest. Results are in August QST. BT Despite careful planning (well maybe not THAT careful) we always seem to have to rely on "moments of ingenuity" at FD. Sliding cable drum end tower base… alligator clip ‘special’ adaptor to run cw… Fleck’s old TO keyer to run cw… pushing mic button on 440 rig while trying to answer 6m CQ… entering W0WOB (no extension) for MYCALL in Kenwood packet rig, thereby confusing the local wx node and digipeater… making do with 2.8 SWR on inadequately tested homebrew 6M pvc quad… yes hams ARE ingenious, at least at certain moments. BT The Kansas ARRL convention will be August 27 at Salina’s Bicentennial Center. There will be interesting meetings and swap table action.

NEXT MEETING JULY 13 K0FJ QTH 145 E. Cherry 7PM CDT
Mike will have a Packet, APRS & Weather demo using AUTOWX and WinAPRS software. Anyone interested in Packet or APRS should plan to attend. This is a hands-on meeting including the KØFJ BBS.
