JUNE 2000

FIELD DAY JUNE 24-25

The big weekend is coming up. Chet NS0O is working on getting a pass to join us, so the crew list, potentially anyway, continues to grow. Five hams have contributed to our "reserve antenna" fund and the plan is to order some sort of wire antenna the day after our meeting, to make us more competitive on our 2nd radio. We hope to firm up radio and other equipment lists at the meeting. With our added flexibility at the airport terminal, we have some decisions to make regarding food, so come prepared to discuss that aspect too. An order for FD pins has still not been placed; we’ll get a final count and order them the day after the meeting as well.

CLUB JACKETS It’s been quite some time since we had any club logo clothing made. T’s & Things in Colby has some good pricing and we’re hoping to get enough interest to make a low-cost run of jackets and/or shirts. We have the option of adding some colors with this supplier, so that’ll be part of our discussion.

DAYTON’LL NEVER BE THE SAME The J twins, Mike and Bruce, drove to Dayton Hamvention in company with fellow Kansans K0WA, AB0S and KI0RI. This was somewhat the same crew that went last year, but Mike and Allan KI0RI were first-timers. It’s hard to describe the 15 hour one-way drive and 2.5 days of mingling with 35000 other hams, but Mike will sure try! Some highlights were bbq supper with ex-Colbyite Skip N2FOE of rural Dayton and his hi-tech ham friends; the banquet where Mike rubbed shoulders with Dayton Ham of the Year Martti OH2BH, the world’s most famous Dxer, then got interviewed by Worldradio as a Dayton newbie; participating in the silliness at the Kansas City DX Club hospitality suite; more silliness at the QRP hospitality suite; and seeing some familiar callsigns pass by or chat at our outdoor swap table. Of course, drooling over all the gear that dealers had inside is a whole other story. Ask BJ and FJ (or their XYLs?) about the THD700A, RIGBlaster, GPS, Compaq Concerto laptop, 15 GB Hard drive etc they thought they couldn’t live without.

K0FJ tower/bbq Ever since radio waves were invented, the antenna raising party has been a tradition. Mike is getting the itch to extend his Rohn25/TA36 to a height more befitting his rank of Dayton veteran. He’s giving fair warning that he may be prowling for victims to help do the honors in trade for some burgers. Stay posted on this one, and keep your climbing shoes in condition.

PACKET RACKET de Mike K0FJ – The BBS has been running for almost a year. Allen - K0MXU is
the only person checking in at this time. K0JJV is still having problems with the WKY Node and continues to forward most of the bulletins by email. I visited with N0KQX - Dale this week regarding the status of the packet nodes in SW KS. He advised that all nodes in the SW KS area are being converted to APRS Nodes. A firmware upgrade makes the Node work specifically for APRS digipeating. If no one has any interest in the BBS operating, we should discuss using the Clby Node for APRS. The APRS mod would work great with the Weather data being sent from Colby & Hoxie schools. If you are not able to attend the meeting, and are interested in the BBS one way or another, please let me know via email.

BANDSCAN Shawn KC0CVS now of Lawrence snagged a few QSO's on 6m. He bagged western Montana on the 3rd of May (stood in line in a pile-up to get him, 10 watts gets buried), then SC and SE Louisiana on the 4th. Just the start of a lot of entries, Shawn. CVS hopes to join us for Field Day if his schedule allows. BT The results of last November's CW Sweepstakes are in and K0BJ’s multiop effort with K0WA AB0S and W0CEM in Jct. City got them 7th place in multiop, including 1st in the Midwest contest region. Their 1073 Qs and 78 of 79 multipliers gets them a plaque for Midwest division winner. The guys who operated K0FJ in Phone should find the results of their tooth ‘n nail fight with N0NB for 2nd place KS multiopany day now. BT Jim KG0PI is using the RIGBlaster that K0FJ picked up at Dayton. This nice little unit interfaces older rigs to work on RTTY, PSK31 and SSB without swapping multiple cables and fiddling with gain settings and is just the ticket for him and his IC751. You may recall we had trouble getting levels set on his rig at our work night over there. BT Bruce K0BJ was going to sell his OLD TR7730 2m rig at the Dayton flea market, and fired it up to smake sure the rx still worked. Well, turns out the xmit is also working (sorta), so he preiced it high, ended up bringing it back home, and has it mounted in his old Toyota van. Thanks to KB0MBT for a drilling job, he has a nice ¼ wave ant mounted on a roof NMO connector too. If you hear BJ with GOOD mobile audio, he’s on his new Kenwood D700A – if it sounds like a wet Dixie cup, it’s the old Kenwood….. BT Jim KC0HBR is headed out to Colorado for some Kojak-type training and hopes to pay a visit to HRO to make the trip worthwhile. He’s got an eye on a tuner, and hopes to throw up some wire, snag an HF rig, and start putting some serious mileage on that General ticket that ‘s now hanging on the wall. BT Part of the Dayton flea sales for FJ and BJ was peddling 5 old Motorola Mitrec radios that the club had inherited from the city years ago. These went pretty low, but at least they got peddled and the club treasury is now $40 fatter. BT Bruce K0BJ was a little surprised to hear AL7BJ calling on .82 the other day. Rex is driving from Fairbanks down to Indiana. When Bruce mentioned his BJ QSL collection, Rex offered to meet him foran eyeball QSO and QSL swapping session at the DQ, which turned into a 30 minute ragchew about foreign travels.

MINUTES OF MAY 11 MEETING No formal minutes were kept at this working meeting, but it was agreed that we should buy some wire antennas to increase our Field Day flexibility, and in order to preserve the treasury, voluntary contributions would be sought.

NEXT MEETING JUNE 8 7PM CDT PIONEER MEMORIAL LIBRARY Serious Field Day planning session. Prepare wire antenna order, FD pin order, decide rig complement, etc. We may discuss club jacket/shirt orders too, and any possibility of helping in the Nine Run Run on FD Saturday morning. Packet node – go with APRS? Optional program – Passport to Friendship; 1990 World Radiosport Team Championship
