NOON SKYWARN NET UP AND RUNNING  Dave N5DBZ and others have been calling the noon CDT Skywarn net on 146.82 since early April. After roll call, a wx description and assessment of spotter activation likelihood is given. Newcomers are always welcome and will be called for. Let’s support NWS and our own public interest by making this net as often as possible during the severe weather season.

WB0VOQ RETIRING  Corky Delzeit, director of Public Power for the City of Colby, is retiring May 30 with a reception at City Hall 1-3PM. Corky has enjoyed HF DXing. He lost his XYL to cancer a while back.

WORKED ALL STATES – THE ‘EASY’(?) WAY – K7YM, a resident of Cheyenne, found that he lacked only KS for his WAS award. He got in touch with a friend at NWS Cheyenne, who in turn knew N5DBZ at NWS GLD. Dave gave the needy ham K0BJ’s email address, and they decided to sked during / after the QKS cwe traffic net on 3.610 that evening. 80M did the trick as signals were well over S9 both ways. Funny how knowing the right person to ask sometimes makes things happen in a hurry.

ARMED FORCES DAY MAY 10-11   The annual Armed Forces Day crossband contacts are coming up. This is the one time of year you can work non-hams in a non-emergency situation. Detailed info at http://www.arrl.org/contests/announcements/af-day/armdfrcs-2003.html

BANDSCAN    The hospital was “hammed up” around Easter, as K0BJ was in for three days with an unplanned gall bladder removal. And KB0LGX’s daughter was in for a rugged week with salmonella poisoning. Both are fine now, but Bruce’s surgeon says that the pecan-shaped but 20% larger stone made his Top 10 List.  BT  K0QP’s harmonic Michaela Robison was back in Colby recently and shared a couple interesting stories about the time she spent studying in Spain.  BT  Congratulations to Scott N0QE who has won a NOAA Administrator’s Award for organizing Skywarn Recognition Day.  A nice feature of the award is an expense-paid trip to Washington DC for presentation of the awards. Another recipient this year is Dennis Hull KB0NYC from Pendelton OR, who used to be GLD WCM. Unfortunately Dennis’ XYL is ill and he won’t be attending the ceremony. Scott hopes to look up Kevin Lynott KC0FEH who is now stationed in the DC area.  BT   Dave K0KHP is now patrolling the Kansas Turnpike and is stationed out of Valley Center. The job has some nice perks compared with the standard, non-turnpike patrol positions.  Parents FJ and OXP assisted with the move from Goodland. Maybe Dave’s residence in the town of contesters K0RH and KI6DY means he’ll get a big case of ham-itis…?  BT  KC0KPE and N0QE recently went to a scouting camporee at Burlington attended by hundreds of area Boy Scouts. Scott and Grady demonstrated ham radio and helped 15 of the scouts earn their radio badges. BT  K0BJ is attending the Midwest Division convention in Lebanon MO and is in the unique position of bossing Riley Hollingsworth around! Bruce was asked by the convention organizers to set up a Royal Order of the Wouff Hong induction ceremony. Since Riley is attending the event, Bruce hit him up to take part in the play and K4ZDH agreed! ARRL President W5JBP is also expected to have a part in the play, which unfolds at midnight Friday.  BT  N0QE reports good tropo a couple weeks ago when he worked a 145.355 machine somewhere.  BT
