NEXT MEETING AT NWS GOODLAND   NWS Skywarn Recognition Day takes place this year on December 7 (GMT).  Our Nov. 14 meeting will be at the NWS office south of the airport, to plan logistics for the event. In addition, a VE session is being held at 5PM CST and anyone wishing to test is welcome – please bring your current license.  Supper will be at approx. 6PM CST – monitor 147.02 or 146.52 for location. Meeting at normal start time 7PM CST.

SNAP ELECTIONS HELD  Not wanting to be outdone by Israel, the TARC called snap elections at the October meeting. (Amazing what you can do when El Presidente isn’t around…) With a mighty stoking of the coalbox and tooting of the steam whistle, the following are TARC officers for 2003:

President   KØBJ Bruce

Vice President   NØXJ Gregg

Sec/Treas   NØXNK Gary

Program Chair   KØQP Jim

WAØVJR – THE VEGAS KID After Darel WAØGBN’s trip out west to see Butch and other ham buddies, KØBJ decided to get in on the act. Bruce and family are traveling out to Sintown for spring break and plan to spend some time with Butch and Libbie. Here’s how Butch spends time with his ham club buddies. You can see from the middle photo, thank goodness, that Butch has eaten that good, cheap Vegas food and maintained his auto-insulation for the brutal Nevada winter………

CREAMCAN DINNER OCT 13  We had good attendance and ‘just right’ wx for this event. Lots of desserts showed up to round out the feast. The adage “Too many cooks spoil the soup” didn’t really hold true – between Bruce, Mike and Jeff successively salting the brew (not to mention Gregg’s secret ingredient…), we had industrial-strength chow that hit home pleasingly. It was nice having Lee Fleckenstein with us (in her old stomping grounds) and a number of the harmonics entertained themselves fishing for a second main entrée. None was snagged, by the way, but the food and fishing both served their purpose.

APRS CAPERS – DE KØFJ… The WØWOB-10 APRS I-GATE is up and running.  I made the WinAprs configuration changes to I-Gate all local VHF APRS traffic to the internet APRS Servers, and not display any TCP/IP traffic unless it involves a NTS or APRS message.  NWS alerts from Goodland should be gated to the local VHF network but may need some additional tweaking to finish up.  All the local traffic from the Colby, Goodland and Hoxie area is available at www.findu.com .  This information is real time.  The local weather node reports are also available at this location.  Additional work is required at the Hoxie Digi site.  A new antenna and TNC / Radio will be required to bring this site up to network operation.  A new coax was installed in October.  We will discuss funding this upgrade at the November meeting.

SWEEPSTAKES ACTIVITY  KØBJ joined his CW Sweepstakes crew in Beloit again this year. ABØS and KØWA have been teaming up for this for a couple decades.

The operation was from WØNO’s QTH se of Beloit. The guys logged 1240 QSOs and got a sweep by working Newfoundland for their last one about noon Sunday. Of reported, unchecked scores the guys now are in 5th in multiop.  Seeing as how KØFJ has a kaput rotator, Mike is planning to join the aforementioned crew for the SSB portion of the contest this weekend.

FIELD DAY 2002   Field Day results are on the web.  We did real well, especially compared with how we were guessing things would go. But have to tip our hat to WØTM's group in KC, as well as the Beloit gang of WØNO, ABØS and KØWA.  Note CO entry NØTM after the KS listings

We finished 15 of 104 in Midwest Division, and 113 of 425 in the competitive 2A category.

POPCORN & DX Movie  NIGHT  The most recent feature was the TI9M DXpedition to Cocos Island off Costa Rica. This was a CD made by two Dutch hams and provided by Bill AKØA of the KC DX Club who was on the trip. KØFJ and BJ heard the story at Omaha, so narrated the CD’s photos. The CD was filled with 5 video clips, including the harrowing Zodiac rides to/from the main boat, and tramping up a steep hill to establish the ‘High’ station.  The program was at K-N using a large projection unit and aside from the narrators, NØXJ and ACØJ enjoyed the program.  Next movie night is planned to be the VP8THU  “Micro-lite” DXpedition to South Georgia off the Antarctic coast. These guys used TS-50s and wire antennas in a low-impact, relatively low cost successful expedition.

CHRISTMAS PARTY ON THE HORIZON   Plans are developing to have the 3rd annual TARC Christmas Potluck at the K0BJ QTH on our regular December meeting night, the 12th but at 6:30PM start time.  With elections out of the way this should be a particularly relaxing event.  In the past this has been billed as a finger-food potluck. This time utensils will be readily available and anyone who wants to bring a ‘hearty’ dish is welcome. For those not in the know, this is a family event and all but the watchdog are welcome (playpen for boa constrictors will be provided). Directions in the December issue.

Veterans' Day special event set  from ARRL web -- To recognize Veterans Day and the anniversary of the birth of Gen Curtis E. LeMay, KØGRL/K4FRA/W6EZV (SK), the Strategic Air Command Memorial Amateur Radio Club (SACMARC) will operate special event station KØGRL on Monday, November 11, from 1200 to 2400 UTC. Operation will be in the General-class phone bands on or near frequencies ending in 47--for 1947 when the Air Force became a single entity)--3947, 7247, 14,247, 21,347 and 28,347 kHz. Operation also may take place on 51.47 MHz and on 146.46 MHz simplex. LeMay held KØGRL when he was the Strategic Air Command, Commander assigned to Offutt Air Force Base near Omaha, Nebraska. LeMay later obtained K4FRA when he served as the USAF Vice Chief of Staff (later Chief of Staff). When he retired in California, he became W6EZV. SACMARC obtained KØGRL via the vanity call sign program in 1997. Include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with QSL requests to SACMARC, PO Box 1292, Bellevue, NE 68005-1292.--Darwin Piatt, W9HZC

BANDSCAN  Godfrey KCØAUH has taken a supervisors position with the City of Dodge City in the Fleet Maintenance Division. He’s no longer jockeying around this area servicing scales, and we miss the 22/82 activity. BT   BT  KØQP Jim and Carol will be moving to the new digs 6 miles south of I-70 on K-25 over the next few weeks. Good luck on the move and be sure to plant a forest of towers!  BT  Speaking of the Robisons, Michaela is continuing her studies in northwest Spain and enjoys the new experiences. Her semester there is drawing toward a close.  BT  KCØHBR made the last Ham Lunch but was groaning a bit…….  The 3-day training he had in Oklahoma involved a pretty good pummeling, apparently.  Fun, fun…..  BT Ballots for the Midwest ARRL Vice Director race have been filtering in to Connecticut, and the counting takes place this Friday. Bruce should know by mid-afternoon Friday whether he’s returning to the board or if KØDEW will take over in January.
