OCTOBER 2000

SIMULATED EMERGENCY TEST RESULTS Our Emergency Coordinator K0FJ was pleased with the participation in the SET October 7. Eight ARES members sent 13 messages and a summary went to Section EC Joe WD0DMV in Topeka via HF. ALL messages were sent on emergency power, which included having to jump-start the Command Post! Just the reason it’s good to shake down equipment, as well as polish traffic handling skills. Mike will be signing up ARES members with new info cards/Ids at the December meeting. Thanks to participants!

REPEATER NET ACTIVE AGAIN Somewhat in the spirit of the above, but also just for general interest, we’re trying the VHF net on the club repeater Thursday nights again. 8PM CT on 146.82 W0WOB repeater. Any and all checkins are welcomed. If nobody has called the net by a couple minutes after 8PM, anybody should feel free to callup and accept checkins/comments.

VE TESTING OCTOBER 21 We’re planning on a Volunteer Exam session Saturday October 21 9:30AM CT. This will be at K0FJ’s office at the top of City Hall. Enter through the SE Fire Dept entrance. This may be our final W5YI session before switching to ARRL VE exams. Thanks to recent upgrades among our BVEs, we can now test Tech through Extra at these ‘routine’ exam sessions. Walkins are welcome, but we appreciate knowing your plans. Email k0fj@arrl.net or k0bj@arrl.net if thinking about testing.

CREAMCAN After spending the previous few days worrying about wx too hot for a ‘great’ creamcan dinner, we had to decide whether to cancel due to DISMAL cool, damp wx. We forged ahead and held the event at Helen Frahm’s (mother of K0BJ), which offered a sunroom to duck into when the chill got too heavy. We had a good crowd including Brad KC0HQZ from Goodland and his XYL, and a CCC student from Panama who is a friend of Patti N0OXP.

KC0HQZ HAUL Sometimes it pays to be in the right place at the right time. Brad KC0HQZ was available to help when Doc Taylor W0FEE’s widow was ready to dispose of his gear. Brad got a great price on Doc’s ATLAS 210, SB-220, 2 tribanders and a lot of related miscellaneous ham gear. Brad needs some help removing one of the tribanders from Doc’s famous ‘utility pole’ skyhook, and may have enlisted KC0HBR to help with the deed. Congratulations Brad.

PACKET RACKET de Mike K0FJ – We successfully repaired the High School Weather Node Rain Gauge at the last meeting. Turned out to be a wire pulled out of a socket….. The node and BBS are running with no problems. Allen is the only one to use the BBS recently. I would like to maintain the BBS for emergency use, but if only 2-3 of us are going to maintain packet equipment, I am beginning to wonder if it is worth time it takes to keep it going. Let me know if you have plans to use packet in the near future.

PROPOSED NEW CONSTITUTION AND BYLAWS Our much-delayed rewrite of Constitution and Bylaws is done and ready for modification and/or passage by the club. Please look over the draft documents at the end of this and be ready to vote. Our ARRL affiliation is ‘on hold’ and can be brought active with passage of fresh organizational documents. Thanks to K0FJ for working on this project.

BANDSCAN Jim KC0HBR is the proud owner of a new (to him) FT840 HF rig that surfaced at the Scott City hamfest/picnic. Interestingly, that’s the very rig Jim had been eyeballing ads on and considering ordering from HRO. Going the used route saved almost 3 C notes, PLUS he got the mobile bracket and FM board to boot! BT Mike K0FJ walked away with a posh doorprize from Scott City – a 5/8 wave 2M mag mount antenna. Thanks to K0EQH and company for putting on a nice get-together in Scott City. BT New K-N Communications employee Jeff Schultz and City of Colby worker Matt Norman have bought Now You’re Talking and are working on getting licensed. Jeff has even been working on cw. BT K0FJ studies well at the "DX Temple" of W0TM in Wolcott CO. Mike and Bruce were impressed with Gary’s computerized station, which monitors multiple packet and webclusters for needed band/countries on HF. When one is detected, an alarm and voice announcement follow. The op. then hits an F key, the rig QSYs to the proper mode/freq, and you’re set to call, work and log the DX station! If this all sounds complex, Mike and Gary say it is – to set up initially. Thereafter, it’s pretty easy and a mighty grand use of technology. This system will be featured as our October program. Be ready to drool…. BT Trojans and friends did well in the ARRL SSB DX contest last March. Results were just published. Scott KB0WPY won single op low power KS with 296 Qs, 138 mults, score 122544. He was the only SOLP entry in KS, but this is a nice effort. K0BJ and KC0HBR did a multiop single xmtr effort, minimal time for multiop. 548 Qs, 196 mults, score 322224. 6/6 in 0 land. Our Colorado friends also operated in this event. Phil N0KE, of Vail took 2nd place W/VE in QRP! Phil used WB0GAZ QTH and ran up 852 flea power Qs in 251 mults for a FB score of 651556, which took first place in CO and midwest region as well. Gary W0TM chose SOHP single band 20M, and ran up 240 Qs and
77 mults for 55440 points. This put him 7th in W/VE 20M single band, in a modest (for him) effort from his KC home. Field Day results should be out for the next newsletter. BT Welcome to Mike KC0IWH, a CCC student who just passed the Tech and has a Kenwood HT. He’s from the KC area, and a neighbor of Jake KB0ZIA. If the Sunflower apartments start glowing at night, mingled RF may be the reason…. BT KC0HBR K0BJ and K0FJ were among the hams chasing K6A through K6L on the weeklong Route 66 Special Event. 12 towns are mentioned on the famous rock n’ Roll song, and all 12 were activated for this on-air party. None of the locals logged all 12 stations, but between them they got all but K6B in St. Louis. BT K0FJ and N0OXP made a trip to Beloit and Concordia to see some retired priests and to "kick some RF butt". Mike bought AB0X’s SB-220 ‘project’. Project, in that Tim’s amp was started on a conversion to run full break-in cw (QSK) with a vacuum relay. Mike had to decide whether to carry on with the mod or return the amp to normal T/R switching. After some false starts and minor foulups, the amp is finished WITH the silent QSK mod, and pumps out a full gallon plus on 80-10 meters! Congratulations Mike. Mike and Patti got involved with erecting 3 sections of Rohn 45 for KI0RI’s impressive new antenna farm in rural Beloit. Mike’s hoping Allen (a fellow Dayton Hamvention caravanner) will extend an invitation to the Trojan crowd for a multiop effort at the aluminum overcast site in the future. BT

NEXT MEETING OCTOBER 12 7PM K0FJ/N0OXP QTH 140 E. Cherry Discussion of officer nominations, possible club jacket order, location for Christmas party. For the program K0FJ will demo his DX Telnet and DX4Windows "automated HF station". K0BJ will show projected JPEG images of his buddy KM9D/mm’s exploits sailing the Panama Canal and some choice DX spots in the Pacific.
