TROJAN CREAMCAN DINNER SEP 28  Get out your long-sleeved shirt and GPS. This year’s fall social event will include a special foxhunt involving the marriage of 2M FM and GPS. If you don’t have a GPS, you can partner with someone who does. Scott N0QE is in charge of this foxhunt, and says to meet at Villa Hi park at 1PM CDT.  If anyone survives this ordeal,  shoppin’ and choppin’ of the sausage, veggies and 807 juice commences about 3PM and the bubbly, tasty stuff should be ready for consumption around 5PM or a bit later. Bring the family to this fun autumn event.

KANSAS STATE FAIR AND HUTCH ARC COMMEMORATE 9/11

Reno County Kansas Amateur Radio Association

www.rckara.org

The RCKARA  has been approached by the Kansas State Fair to setup a commemorative special event station for Thursday, September 11th. 2003.   We will have an HF special event station and 2-meter station, a display of QSL cards and amateur radio equipment (old and new).  We will also be doing educational sessions for school kids during the day.

Since this is being done at the Kansas State Fair,  we want to include as many hams from around the state as are interested in helping with this event. This is a one-day event, from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.  If you would like to help, please contact Zack  (address below).

We will be located in a large tent outside the 4H Encampment building, at the north end of the fairgrounds. East 23rd. Ave. and Bison Blvd. on the fairgrounds.  This is close to gate E5 and not far from  Bison Arena.

We will have the station running basically all day on Thursday 11 September on or around 14.250MHz, 21.350MHz, and 28.400MHz. We have secured the special event callsign WØC for the duration of the event.

All radio amateurs are invited to participate, but we ask that you please sign up to work a specific 30-minute period so that everyone can have their chance to operate. Please e-mail Zack Clobes, WØZC, zclobes@swbell.net  if you are interested in helping out. Please bring a copy of your license if you plan on operating the club station.

If you can't help, please come by and say "hi" if you are at the Kansas State Fair that day.

73, Larry Cannon, KØSFV Secretary, RCKARA

QSL buro adds “Q”  The Zero Bureau has asked us about picking up a 2nd letter to sort, and our group has decided to take on suffixes beginning in “Q”. This is a relatively small letter apparently with only a couple big users, so the work load shouldn’t increase much. Transfer of the letter will occur at the next opportunity to make an in-person tradeoff of the supplies.

PENDLETON NWS OFFICE

 K0BJ went

by KB0NYC’s salt mines in Oregon on the way to a wedding in Washington. Didn’t have time to stop for a visit, and the local repeaters must be either PLed or off the air. But Bruce got a photo – looks a fair bit like NWS Goodland from a distance. But the geography is definitrely different….

MT SUNFLOWER IN SPRING

CHRISTMAS PARTY AT MONTANA MIKE’S  Due to a policy change at Montana Mike’s we’re holding the Christmas party there as our regular Dec. 11 club meeting. We’ll gather at 6PM and eat about 6:20. Ordering will be from the menu and separate checks will be ok. We’ll be getting a count of expected attendees to advise the restaurant a few days prior to the party.

APRS CAPERS  - DE KØFJ –

BANDSCAN    Dave K0QI bought a Veritech laptop that he’s pleased with. BT  Motorcycle madness seems to be infecting the Trojans. Mike K0FJ bought a 1986 1200cc Honda Goldwing that he’s enjoying and hopes to some riding with son Dave K0KHP. K0QP and AC0J have also been considering getting into two-wheeling. Who knows, we may have a sudden rash of mobile signals with LOTS of wind noise…?  BT K0BJ and family have a new addition – temporarily. Namwan, a high school senior from Thailand, is an exchange student at CHS and staying with Big Joke’s family. She has joined the CHS Tech Student Association and enjoys computing. BT AC0J and family recently vacationed in the north country. Jeff’s kids were at the grandparents in Broken Bow, so they picked up the harmonics and proceeded to Mt. Rushmore, “Carhenge” in Alliance, Agate Fossil Beds, Wyoming and some other spots on a 6 day tour. BT The K-N guys have KC0HBR’s FT-840 hooked up with a computer interface at the W0WOB club shack. It has a packetcluster window so you can click on a DX spot and the rig will QSY and change modes, making the chase for rare ones pretty techno-simple. The 5BTV vertical performs well with the large metal-roof counterpoise too, although line noise plagues the area. BT Ask K0MXU about his son’s recent camping adventure. Sounds like quite an interesting time, but I forget the details as this goes to press….  BT Congratulations to Dave K0KHP who will be married the last Saturday in June 2004. That’s dandy, but there is one big, bad detail…..  his bride chose Field Day weekend for the event! Looks like K0FJ will be out of the scene for TARC FD 2004 but, as N0XJ points out, the Goodland Catholic church IS a public venue…. Hmmmmm…..  BT  A certificate request for the 2001 Mt. Sunflower K0S operation just filtered in to the club mailbox……  some people take a while ordering their wallpaper.  BT Mike K0FJ provided an inservice briefing to new CHS tech instructors Gordon Rasmussen and Lamoreaux Fulwider. The two plan to emphasize weather in this year’s Tech Labs. BT Looks like K0BJ may not be getting up a 2nd or 3rd tower this summer, BUT he HAS bought a mast and fashioned some guy attach points to beef up his existing, but errant TH5 which broke loose of its mast a month or so ago. He hopes to add a 2el Shorty Forty yagi to the stack and may be warming up the BBQ for a TARC work party soon BT
