REPEATER ANTENNA MOVED The move of our antenna over to the east leg of the Liberty Cellular tower was completed by Andy WB0OQJ a couple weeks ago. It’s a little difficult to assess the changes, with so much tropo enhancement in this season, but it appears that the modeling done beforehand was a good indicator and propagation to Hoxie is improved, while Butch WA0VJR is still in good shape at Wallace. Thanks to KA0FBQ KC0BNV K0FJ K0BJ KB0MBT N0XNJ and K0MXU who contributed toward covering the cost of the move.

KC0GLA ON THE AIR Nathan Reitcheck KC0GLA has been active on 22/82. He’s pulled down a job at Office Works in Colby and is living in a trailer in Levant. Nathan has some old Motorola equipment and hopes to get it set up for a 70 cm band repeater, with a homebrew controller. Congratulations on your ticket, Nathan.

KB0WPY ORGANIZES NATIONAL SPECIAL EVENT Congratulations are in order to Scott KB0WPY. He’s organized a nifty operating event for the last weekend of November to work various NWS offices on the air for a sharp, endorsable certificate. The event is plugged in the Public Service column of October QST. The ‘fun’ doesn’t end for GLD that weekend however – the Goodland office will do the QSLing on the certificates.

CREAMCAN SUPPER SEPT 19 We had kind weather and a good turnout for the festivities. A special guest was Irma Lee, XYL of K0RXT. Another guest was Dale Bagley K0KY, the new Section Manager of Missouri who was returning from a workshop in Denver. Dale didn’t stay for supper but we enjoyed visiting. Ex-Colbyites Dale N0KQX and Nancy N0OXQ Urban from Garden City made the trek, and K0BJ’s houseguest Barrie Blount from England also joined the crew. A packet station setup powered by KB0MBT’s trailer generator allowed some playing around for folks when their fingers weren’t full of spoons or corn cobs.

BANDSCAN In addition to Ham Lunch on Thursdays (check on 22/82 for the day’s venue) we often have lunch at Gambino’s on Fridays as they have a good special on the buffet. Last Friday Shawn Shively KC0CVS, Chris and harmonic were in town for some veterinary continuing education and dropped in on the group. Shawn is having fun on 6M SSB, running a dipole and snagging some good sporadic E DX, when his dipole isn’t down (one end is tied to a tree limb that likes to ‘flap’)!BT Jim KG0PI had a run-in with a brown recluse spider while mowing the lawn a few weeks back. He’s recovered well but has a "tuned cavity" in his side as a souvenir of the encounter. BT Those of you who are ARRL members have received a ballot for Midwest Division director. Lew Gordon K4VX is retiring after six years on the board. Vice Director K0BJ says he can work with either John WR0R from KC, or Wade W0EJ from Cedar Rapids. But Bruce has endorsed W0EJ and is impressed with his ARRL, ham radio and career experiences. BT Many of you are familiar with Rick Palm K1CE, longtime head of the Field Services Department at ARRL Hq. Both Rick and his wife have come into inheritances recently, and are planning to move to Florida in mid-November. It will be a challenge to find someone to fill Rick’s place at Hq. The recent combining of Field and Educational Services into one department will help the transition somewhat. BT K0BJ’s houseguest and friend of Trojans Barrie Blount from Sherwood Forest, spent 3 days of his US vacation in the Colby hospital. He was losing blood from a stomach problem, but got squared away. The diversion occurred during his planned return to England, so he ended up extending his stay here through Monday Oct. 11.

NEXT MEETING OCTOBER 14 PIONEER MEMORIAL LIBRARY 7:00PM CDT

The PML meeting room is now our ‘normal’ meeting site. Two important items: Nomination of officers for Y2K. Discussion of possible move of Christmas Party to Colonial Steakhouse in Oakley. They can better handle big parties than any Colby restaurants. Our videotape program "Contest Night Live" is a zany 30 minute takeoff on Saturday Night Live done by the Kansas City DX Club a number of years ago.

The Trojan Amateur Radio Club is a general interest educational and public service ham club. We maintain a 2M FM repeater and a station at the NWS in Goodland. Dues are $10/annually, payable to Mike Albers K0FJ, 140 E. Cherry, Colby KS 67701. Material from the Trojan Harmonic may be freely copied; attribution is appreciated. News and free email subscription requests to KØBJ, PO Box DX, Colby KS 67701 or bfrahm@colby.ixks.com
