UPCOMING EVENTS Our tentative idea is to hold our annual autumn creamcan supper the Sunday after the meeting. This date isn’t fixed yet, so bring your ideas to the club meeting and standby for more info. This the BEST way to welcome in autumn…..

SALINA HAMFEST AUGUST 27 The Kansas State ARRL convention drew members K0FJ, N0OXP, KB0MBT, N0XNJ, K0MXU and K0BJ. The best crowd in many years was there (400+), and lots of swapping was done including some major items of K0FJ and K0BJ’s. Thanks to Greg and Kathy for watching the table when the J twins were at forums. Norm Dillman, KSU professor and Sunrayce advisor, who often uses our repeater, was named Kansas Amateur of the Year. Congratulations to Norm! Lots of eyeballs were enjoyed, including Dale and Nancy N0KQX/OXQ now from Garden City, Gary W0TM who travels from KC to Colorado, contest station owner John W0CEM of Junction City, and numerous others.

NWS SPECIAL EVENT IN DECEMBER Scott KB0WPY and the other organizers of the nationwide special event for NWS stations say we are welcome to help operate at NWS Goodland. They will probably be using the special call N0A again this year. It is the first weekend of December. The pileups are waiting….shall we get a group to join the fun in Goodland?

PACKET RACKET de Mike K0FJ – Our meeting wil be a great chance to see the APRS station/ weather instruments at Colby High School.

HIRED GUNS VISIT COLORADO That news would have sturck fear in the hearts of citizens 120 years ago, but this time it was merely K0FJ and K0BJ grabbing an invitation from Kansas/Colorado resident Gary W0TM to operate in the All Asia contest from his mountain home at 10200’ west of Vail CO. Mike and Bruce brought their XYLs and Pual and Sharon Steele, and all had a great time at the beautiful home perched high on Bellyache Ridge. The only bellyaching was over radio conditions – even Gary’s FT1000MP, Alpha 91B high-tech amp and KLM antennas couldn't create nonstop runs, but the guys did reasonably well given the conditions. The poor daytime results allowed time for sojourns to the Leadville train ride, and a day at the Beaver Creek ski resort where Oktoberfest was was raging. The guys, along with Vail local N0KE, have some hope of winning first in North America Multi/single in this event. A grand time was had by all, including a bear that broke into Steele’s van looking for goodies!

BANDSCAN Jim BT Jake KB0ZIA had an expensive night at the county fair. No, he didn’t get carried away at the duck shooting booth, but he LOST a duck, with radio attached. His nice VX5R H-T slipped out of his belt and even though he noticed it missing in a short distance from his car, he didn’t find it. The plot thickens – a few days later some odd traffic started showing up on the Police freqs, and eventually officer Sitton recovered Jake’s rig, which was modified for wide xmit. Some kids couldn’t resist saying ‘hello’ to the cops! The rig was scheduled to be used as evidence for awhile, but was removed from the wintess list eventually. BT Darel WA0GBN bought some 70cm yagis and is working on getting active on 432 Mhz SSB. If 2 meters is any indication, there ought to be some good DX. Even on the poor signal/noise FM mode, A LOT of DX has been coming in on our 146.82 repeater. BT K0BJ and K0FJ were active in the Scandinavian RTTY contest in mid-August. Bruce just got his computer on rtty right before the contest; both he and Mike were running WriteLog to log QSOs and send/rx RTTY tones. Speaking of RTTY, you may recall Bruce and Mike joined Jim KG0PI for the January RTTY Roundup, using Jim’s call. The guys took 7th in multiop hi power category, trying not to mention that was out of 9 entries in that class….. BT Condolences to the family of Rick Horinek N0XNM. Although he was a faithful attender of our theory class and graduated with the N0XN group, he never was active. Rick did have a lot of interest in computers and operating systems. BT Not to be outdone by the contingent of Rocky Mtn. Hired Gun operators, Jim KG0PI is planning his regular retreat to Breckenridge CO with two friends, including one-time ham wannabe CW Hamilton. Alas, PI is not taking any of his QRP gear on this trek. However he will be real near the QTH of W0IZ ex W4ETO Dick Ehrhorn, the founder of Alpha amplifiers who has the highest QTH in North America BT Congratulations to MBT/XNJ’s sister-in-law Marian Lindberg, who is the new EMS director in Thomas County. This should guarantee our already secure job as comms providers for the annual Nine Run Run footrace. BT Congratulations to K0FJ – Mike has just completed the 3rd of three phases in the big server cutover at the city library. BT Our newest HFer, Jim KC0HBR has been checking into the Kansas Sideband net weeknights on 75. Jim’s been scrimping dollars and saving boxtops for a new HF rig of his own, and has his eyes on something at HRO.

NEXT MEETING SEPTEMBER 14 6PM WORK SESSION For those able to come early, we’ll replace the wx. Station rain gauge. Colby High School Auditorium 7pm. We’ll have a two-part program. K0BJ and K0FJ will show projected JPEG images of their contest efforts and tourings around W0TM’s place. This will be followed by a tour of the weather station/W0WOB APRS station at CHS.
