2002 HOLIDAY WISHES FROM THE FRAHMS

Our year has been eventful and good. Karlyn had eye muscle surgery which successfully got both eyes working as a unit, and he no longer needs glasses. And we discovered we like the zoo in Garden City.  Bruce’s cardiac follow-ups are good and his weight is staying down. Janice keeps tabs on elevated blood pressure.  Niece Pam Geihsler and Ed will have twins in February. Bruce’s mom Helen will have an Open House for her 90th birthday March 28. Niece Jerri and Phil Shuman painted the trim on the front of our house and we are almost finished applying the main color. On the interior front, we were excited to acquire a huge silk Persian carpet from an Ellis antique store for a great price. It looks stately in our family room.

January brought another drive to Dallas for the ARRL meeting; this time we visited nephew Jean Steele’s family in their Colleyville home.  Then we enjoyed a week of pleasant weather at our Cayman timeshare. Thanks to the hospitality of our  English friends on North Sound we extended the stay 2 days so Bruce could participate in 2 radio contests.  Janice arranged a nifty timeshare trade to Cave Creek north of Phoenix for Easter week.  Our pueblo unit right in the desert was still convenient to the museums and attractions. Residents we saw included niece Wendy’s family, our best man Gerry Hayden’s family, and snowbird radio friends John and Joenne from Junction City at their fancy RV/getaway. Hungarian ex-AFS son Tibi from San Diego drove over for a day’s visit; it was wonderful hearing about his job with Ericsson and other exploits. A moderate fender-bender with our rental car added some excitement to the week…..   We celebrated Memorial Day by camping out in the old Higgins trailer/tent at Scott Lake. Bruce and Karlyn even managed to catch a bass. It was just under keeper size, but ended up on the grill anyway. In June Jon joined us and with Mike and Patti Albers we attended the Sioux City hamboree. A special treat was a three hour ride in a 24’ motor boat on the Missouri River. We enjoyed the night beauty of that historic waterway. An overnight visit by missionary friends near our 25th anniversary was a treat as we armchair-traveled to Thailand and heard of computer translation techniques and one daughter’s glider camp experiences.  Our English friend Barrie returned in September and October. He got fully involved in brother-in-law Paul Steele’s  homebuilt airplane project. Brother Kenton Baughman stopped by and also enjoyed a tour of the “bomber factory”. We joined Janice’s entire family for a pre-Thanksgiving weekend in Great Bend.

We’ve now had two years’ drought abated only by 3 months’ normal rain in summer ’01.  Still, we harvested some wheat despite low expectations. Dryland corn died during the summer. We had grave concerns for the irrigated  as well with pollination and evapotranspiration worries. Results varied wildly, even within individual circles, but we were surprised and grateful to bin a ¾ irr. corn crop. ’03 wheat is looking fine now but subsoil moisture is non-existent, so we’re pulling for a wet winter and spring.

BRUCE has eased up a BIT on his low-fat diet, while his daily aerobic and iso-exercise routine has expanded. He enjoys ham radio contacts and contests,  is president of the local club and recently won re-election to the national ham radio board. Rock tumbling is a new avocation.  Orchestra, church choir and barbershop chorus still occupy too many evenings.  bfrahm@colby.ixks.com

JANICE travels and plans programs as NW area director of Kansas FCE.  Her service on the Hays District board of Ordained Ministries continues to be fulfilling and interesting. A summer and autumn pastime was making the garage sale circuit; net result was lots of entertainment and many bargain treasures.    jfrahm@colby.ixks.com

JON is in his fourth year at Kansas State, and will be taking one extra semester to receive his bachelor’s degree. His team in Software Engineering is designing a remote-control robot which is a particularly interesting project. For the first time in his college career he’s feeling  really “pressed” with classwork. Jon is looking into summer internships.   353 Redbud Estates, Manhattan KS  66502 785-587-8109             jkf5868@ksu.edu

KARLYN  enjoys the full-day routine of first grade, and is doing reasonably well with his paras and special ed. teacher. He is good with the computer and has a favorite CD that explores all aspects of airport operations. He enjoys weekly tumbling class at the Community Building.  Visits with his two Colby grandmas and riding his Tough Trike are special pastimes.
