LEGION OF THE CRAMPED

This page is dedicated to Lindsay Hutton - the brainchild of The Cramps only official international fan club. Lindsay began The Next Big Thing in 1977 with Rockin' Bones coming along later. The Legion of The Cramped (LOTC) was originally founded by Lindsay together with Steven Morrissey, but Morrissey dropped out early on to work with his band The Smiths. So, the LOTC became Lindsay's baby. The LOTC began in April of 1980 and lasted until Lux and Ivy asked it to be stopped (see issue #7 below) late in 1983. The Rockin' Bones fanzine contiued on for a couple more issues and Lindsay continued on with The Next Big Thing.

I would like to thank Chris Booth, David Cocks (I still owe you - please contact me.), and Lindsay for providing me with much of the material used on this page. Thanks guys!!!

An introduction to Rockin' Bones by Lindsay Hutton.

“I’m not sure how this material will transfer to the PC screen but hopefully it’ll convey an idea of how they looked “in the flesh”. These things are more than 20 years old now and in those days copying and offset printing was a pretty expensive game. The originals were pasted up and handwritten for that homely feel in what was the polar opposite of desktop publishing.”

“Anyway, when I see these things on a list for 20 quid a pop or whatever, it always makes me think that I should get my act together and now I have. Through the good graces of Mike here, the conduit is open. This man is tireless in his campaigning and we (and they) are lucky to have him around.”

“Hopefully you’ll get some kind of kick outta this bumf. I never (to this day) fully understood why the LOTC was canned when it was - but for me, it was pretty much over anyway - people who claimed to like Bauhaus were joining...”

“I have had no contact with “the band” since August 1983 when the termination letter arrived. There was never any intention for this tail to attempt to wag said dog and despite some uncharitable mumblings toward me in the period that followed, I felt let down but let the chapter slide. Rockin’ Bones continued for a few issues and was a little more expansive. It covered the emerging worldwide garage rock explosion which in many ways, The Cramps almost single-handedly ignited. My first “assignment” for Sounds was indeed to interview The Gun Club.”

My allegiance was always to the fans. The folks, who I felt, shared the excitement. The members made it something way different and beyond any mere “fan club”. How does it go again… oh yeah… “until the cows come home…”
