Browser Problems
This page is related to problems viewing web pages in your Internet browser.
Before making any changes to your system, we strongly encourage you to make sure you have either the latest version of Microsoft Internet Explorer, or the latest updates to the version that is best for your system:
| Common Problems & Solutions |
Here are a few common problems and solutions for browser related issues:
"Page cannot be found" (or displayed,) and I've been there before. Or "Cannot connect to server."
It is possible that a web page may be temporarily unavailable or may have been removed. If you can visit other web pages without difficulty then that is likely to be the problem.
If you cannot reach any web pages then it is likely you are having a problem with connecting your computer to the Internet. Verify that you have a valid connnection. If your browser is configured to log on to the internet automatically, the modem handshake may not have stabilized when you requested the page. On the lower-right hand corner of your screen, you should see a tiny icon of a computer screen. Double-click this icon and a connection box should come up specifying the connection speed, duration, and bytes transferred. If this icon is not present, you are not connected to the internet. Try to manually connect, then try to refresh (or reload) the site:
Instructions for Manual Connection:
1.) Open "My Computer"
2.) Open "Dial-Up Networking"
3.) Open your connection
4.) Press the connect button and let the connection run, then try refreshing the page.
If you cannot connect, try some of the solutions on our connections page.
Pages load too slowly or not at all.
You may be having connection difficulties. Consult our connections page to help alleviate these problems.
Consider also that anyone can create a web page, but not everyone knows how to create pages that load quickly and efficiently. The increasing speed of modems and internet connections has prompted designers to lean very heavily on larger and larger graphics. In fact, some sites are designed to be viewed only by those who have extremely high speed Internet connections.
I get an error when a particular web page loads
Browsers not only display HTML pages, but most can also run programs written in scripting languages like JavaScript or VBScript. These scripting languages allow page designers to add interactive features such as buttons that change when you roll the mouse over them, etc.
One possibility is that if your browser is not up to date, it may not be able to correctly run the programs. Follow the link at the top of this page to upgrade your browser.
Also, as with every programming language the possibility of bugs exist, and the less experienced the programmer, the more likely the possibility of bugs. In fact, some of these programming errors can be so bad they can cause your browser to completely freeze or shut down.
Keep in mind that these scripting languages are specifically designed to restrict the possibility of damaging your computer or operating system, so viewing these types of pages is still very safe. Even if your browser shuts down, you can simply restart it and go on to a different page.
The important point here is that these types of problems are almost always the fault of the web page designer, not your browser or your Internet service.
A web page looks like my browser has messed up how it is viewed
While most Internet browser interpret HTML code similarly, there are differences. If a page designer tries to use HTML code that works great on one browser, he or she may be surprised to find that it looks terrible on another.
It is soley the responsibility of the page designer as to how a page looks in various browsers and it is very unlikely that there is anything you can do to see the page properly, short of trying other Internet browsers.
You may want to contact the page designer to tell them (politely) how the page looks in your browser.
When I open my browser, I get an Illegal Operation error.
If the error occurs when you first boot the program, it is either related to a hardware/software problem in your computer's system (in which case you will see the illegal error in other programs) or a problem with the browser itself. If it is just when the browser loads, it will be a problem just with the browser. Reinstalling the Windows system (yikes) or the browser may alleviate the error.
